INTERVIEW: Craig Chalmers on Joseph

If you enjoyed Any Dream Will Do on TV then Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is a must-see when it comes to Worthing.
For taking the lead role is contestant Craig Chalmers and starring alongside him are another three would-be Josephs from the show.

Keith Jack, who was in second place, is the narrator and Chris Barton and Antony Hansen are among the brothers. Also in the cast is Wayne Smith, from ITV's Grease is the Word.

This is Bill Kenwright's (one of the show judges) production of the Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber family musical, based on the Biblical story of Joseph, his 11 brothers and the coat of many colours.

This smash hit is packed with non-stop action, music, laughter, and infectious fun and is set to a legendary soundtrack, including the songs Close Ev'ry Door, One More Angel and Any Dream Will Do.

Craig has been touring with the show since August and you might think he was a controversial choice considering he was the seventh of 12 to be eliminated from Any Dream.

"I was just his (Bill Kenwright's) type of Joseph," said Craig. "I'm just so happy and very honoured to get to play Joseph. I have been working for a long time and to get on the stage and get support from the right people has been fantastic. It's what I've wanted to do for as long as I can remember and to finally be able to perform and have a career from it is great.

"Four of us are in the show now – Antony has just joined as a brother. It's good to be working together rather than competing, although we were all friends during the competition.

"It's a fun-filled show for the audience, they will see a lot of the guys from Any Dream and it will put a smile on their faces."

As well as reading up on the historical story of Joseph, Craig had learned a lot of musical and theatre techniques.

He is loving the tour, including playing his home town of Edinburgh in front of his friends and family. "My mates wind me up a bit but they think what I'm doing is great," he said. "I've lost a stone and a half in weight. I've got to wear a loincloth every night, so I try and work out as much as I can. I have to feel comfortable in a loincloth!"

The former Pop Idol entrant was singer for a male strip troupe called G-Force and part of boyband No Reason.

His experience with Any Dream was much more positive than with Pop Idol. "I was put off a bit by the way you get treated on Pop Idol – as soon as you get put out you're out the back door. Going for Any Dream was a big decision. You have to dust yourself off and come back when you get a knockback when there are thousands of people trying to do the same as you.

"With Any Dream you felt they cared about your career. It was very intense. It's a lot of work and you have the cameras in your face all the time.

Craig is with the tour until May* and hopes to extend his contract beyond that time. After that, anything is possible, although he would like some TV work at some point.

"I just want to do a good job of Joseph at the moment," he said.



*Craig has confirmed he is contracted until November 2008

Excellent news you're getting better Stuain and I was just fine in the storms; we came through fine here apart from a garage roof blowing off a a couple of damaged roofs. The sea looked wicked though !! Wow, what a sight. Fantastic idea these webcams (you didn't think i actually went and looked in person did you. not in that weather ) There's one watching the beach I go to when I walk the dog - one day I must post the link and go walk the dog and wave o/ It's really funny it is, my oh did it the other day. I dared him to do a dance for me, but he turned to the camera and stuck his bum out instead ! He's so cultured my man

You are the lovely Craigette responsible for us all getting to see Craig on Irish TV - and seeing him blush like a girlie when he saw his pic of him in the loin cloth for the very first time. One of my favourite ever Craig "moments" that is !!! It's hilarious !
