Argos scart switcher...
huwdw
09-04-2003
Hi, I just bought a DVD player, however the RGB scart on my tv is already occupied by my DTT box. Will the scart switcher from argos do the job and pass through the RGB signal?

Thanks

I might potentially need something like this in the next few months as I will probably be looking to run a DTT adapter, PS2, maybe an XBOX, and also my Thomson NICAM VHS video recorder into a TV with just 1 RGB compatable SCART socket (the video being the only one that wouldn't be inputting an RGB signal) so would this device suit my needs?

My DTT box is the Daewoo Setpal so sadly looping the video through it is not an option as it only has the one SCART connector outputting to the TV...

BTW if the link above doesn't work, it's Argos product code is 534/1922.

Well the argos switcher is only a tenner and it does the job, but a couple of things I've noticed about mine - composite performance is not very good (ie. much worse than normal composite) so use it only to choose between RGB sources. Also, pin-8 WSS signals only seem to work if you have only one of the input devices switched on, regardless of which input you select (so I lose my SKY widescreen switching if I turn/leave the gamecube on). Guess this is an interference/build quality issue - might be worth spending the extra if you can find a better one.

That's interesting - this one I've found on the website is £25...

All they had was the big chunky plastic one for a tenner, unless the catalogue's been updated in the last couple of months. Alternatively, you should be able to get a no-frills 2 or 3 input one from places like maplin for 10-15 quid.

"no-frills" makes me suspecious these don't support RGB - which would kind of be the point of me buying one of these - I wouldn't need to rip SCART connectors in and out the back of the TV, and also I'd get all my devices in RGB where possible (Digibox does RGB already, would need new cables for console, rather doubt the VHS video will output RGB mode pictures, but might pass them through from the second SCART perhaps as mine has two?)

I guess the thing to do is wait until I've got my setup more or less ready to install in the new room and then buy one, if it doesn't meet my requirements, take it back under the 16-day garantee...

That £25 one adapters 1 scart into 5.

Given the usual TV manufacturer insistence that 2 scarts is fine, I actually run with two scart switchers - a basic 2-input job, from the local electronics shop I think (15 quid, fully wired rgb capable), and one of the argos 3-input ones (10 quid, also rgb but not good for composite). I use the Argos one for sky+gamecube, and the other switcher for the vcr (composite) and ps2 (s-video). And then the DVD goes in the front s-video! It is possible (just) to fit all your kit into the telly and still get a good picture...

I use a B-Tech 'Quintro'

5 x SCART inputs, 4 of which are RGB/S-Video.
WS switching and auto signal switching plus remote control.
No more getting up to switch devices.

But...at a price. I paid around £70, but well worth it.

Have you had any problems with the remote control? I find it very rarely responds first time. It's not the remote itself as I've downloaded it into my Home Theater Master remote and it's the same, if not worse.

Yes, it's not very responsive even on my Philips Pronto.

But for the amount of times i need to use the remote it's not really a problem as I rely on the auto switching which works very well.

one of the scart sockets on the back of my tele seems to be dodgy, if i my stereo is connected to it it works fine, but when my dvd player is connected i have to keep wiggling the scart lead as the i lose the picture, and as im getting digital i need another socket so i was wondering wether the £10 scart switcher box from argos would do the job

The argos switcher will do the job, at least for feeding up to three RGB devices into one socket. But it won't help loose connections - most leads really need to be hammered all the way in to work at all - check that and also check that individual leads are not buggered by swapping them around if you still have problems.
