To 1080p or not to 1080p
I've been looking at buying an LCD Sony Bravia W or X series. I was looking at the 40" models as they can handle Full HD (1080p).
But after a measure up in the living room the 40" would be to big so looks like a 32". Now the 32" Bravia's are only HD ready not Full HD (1080p) will Full HD come to these screens in the future or is the screen too small to notice any real difference between 720p and 1080p? Thanks for any comments. Jemes Last edited by jemes : 01-05-2007 at 12:44. |

Sony's Full HD LCDs look good when fed a 1080p source, but much less so with lower resolution material.
If you want a smaller screen I would forget 1080p and LCD and get a 37" plasma, such as Panasonic's 37PX70. You can get them online for around £750. Not only do they deliver great pictures they look fantastic when coupled with the cabinet stand. Last edited by meltcity : 01-05-2007 at 12:48. |

Personally I don't consider the full HD sets worth the extra premium!. |

Nigel, have you seen any PS3 games in 1080p on these sets? And compared them side by side to lower res? I am also weighing up whether to go down the "FULL" HD route or not and as my wife bought me a PS3 for my birthday i thought I may as well try to take full advantage of it.
Other uses will be Blu-Ray (through the PS3), SKY-HD (will get it once i get the TV) and still a fair amount of SD stuff (far too many DVDs to mention!) EDIT - will be looking towards at least a 40inch but possibly as much as 50 or 52 (the wife will probably want to settle on a 46 tho!). Am still looking at both LCD and Plasma. I'll probably end up getting a PS3. So would there be a noticble diffrence between 720p and 1080p on a 40" or 32" screen? |

If you have a friendly dealer where you're planning buying a TV from?, ask him if you can take your PS3 in the shop to try!. |

That's what i think i may do Nigel. I don't mind paying a certain "premium" for the personal service, but not too much (ie not excessively expensive compared to internet prices). I wouldn't feel right in "using" a local dealer like that and then giving all my money to some e-tailer. But that's a different story!

So if I went for the 32" Bravia LCD screen will there be much difference between that and the 40" (1080p)?
Going to check them out in the shops first, hopefully side by side. Will 1080p come to the 32" range or would you not notice the difference due to the screen size? Thanks Jemes |

I have posted this on other threads but I still think it comes into this one.
In the shop i have set up a ps3 on 40'' Sony ''s'' series along side a 32 '' tosh 3030. The tosh wins hands down. thing is the tosh isnt full hd but 1080p( they do it in 37'' as well) and I am waiting on a delivery of the full hd x series so I can do this again. Dont know if there is much diff between 1080p full hd and 1080p. On another tac the Samsung current stuff seems to be as good as the Sony ''w'' range in terms of spec (800-1 contrast, same srs sound etc) without the full hd aspect (same factory I believe) and would be worth a look. Good hunting |

Most PS3 games are 720p native, so all you will be seeing on a 1080p TV is 720p upscaled to 1080p. Same goes for the Xbox 360.
I wouldn't use a games console as a guide to picture quality. Video material is far more demanding of a display. |

![]() I was referring specifically to games that list 720p as the maximum available resolution, i.e. a lot of games. The PS3 doesn't upscale these games so 720p is the highest output resolution. As for whether the PS3's 1080p compatible games are developed in 1080p, I honestly don't know. Developing games at double the resolution of 720p could actually lead to less detailed images because so much extra processing power is required to maintain high frame rates on the larger display area, and perhaps that's why some games area 720p. Or maybe they're just upscaled.
