geting a 42" panny on saturday and i was thinking of getting one of the new panny hd/dvd recorders with a hdmi output.I already have a panny dvd/hd put only has component output(and scart) i have been told by a shop not to bother to wait for hd dvd as i would not notice the differance between the two,Question is was the shop right? would i not notice any differance between hdmi and a component picture and if not i take it it will be for ever before we see a afordable hd dvd recorder thats if blue ray dose not get there first

The shop is correct, there is no noticeable difference in PQ between component & HDMI. Im sure it will be a few years before we see affordable HD-dvd recorders.

Not been a full on techy, my idea is that component is better than normal scart, but, RGB scart is also pretty good.

I have 2 dvd players one puts out RGB scart the other I have puts out component & HDMI, watching the same movie through both DVD players I prefer the quality of component.
Component obviously will carry a picture better than 480 where as scart prob won't.

So anyway if it was me I would stay with the DVD player that already has component, your TV will do the upscailing for you & you are using one of the best connections around. Buying the other DVD player will more than likely not show any improvement.

Hope my waffle has helped some what.

What is best out of RGB Scart and S-Video in your opinion?

RGB scart carries each part of the video signal separately, S-video does not. RGB scart is the superior format, you carnt really have an opinion on that, its... just, a fact.

For a DVD player, component is better than RGB scart because dvds are progressive scan and scart does not support this.

S-Video simply cures some of the problems with PAL, mainly by keeping the colour and luminance separate - but it still has VERY, VERY low colour resolution (a PAL or S-Video colour picture is just a B&W picture with a few coloured 'blobs' struck on top - think B&W drawing and young child with coloured crayons).

RGB has full resolution on each of the three colours, so is absolutely miles ahead - in fact far more than any SD sources can provide!.

But by curing most of the PAL problems, S-Video is VERY useable, although it's lower quality than much of the source material (such as DVD and satellite).

I managed to say that in far less words

yes mate it has helped me a lot, i must admit i tried component with my panny and i think it looked crap,But having said that i was using normal free rca leads. At the end of the day i think i will still change my panny e85, apart from the fact it has an hdmi output as far as i no the new panny is quicker better pic and has a bigger hd

The reason I ask is that I recently got Sky+ and am shocked by how bad the picture is when I record onto dvd (the RGB scart goes straight to the tv) but the Sky+ box has an s video output and the dvd recorder has an S Video input so thought it would be better to do it that way. What do you think?

Hi folks,

Hooked up the Tosh HD1 dvd player when it came out and mucked about a bit as you do. with different settings on a SD dvd.

Was using the Incredibles which looked fab, but a message came up saying that due to the disc it could not output above 576p on progressive???????????????

Is this commonplace?
