EastEnders: Tokenism/ethnic minorities
I found an interesting article from 2002, where it said that EastEnders only had a 9% visible ethnic minority, which was bad as it didn't reflect the 37% in East London nowadays. There was only Anthony, Paul, Patrick, Asif, Nita and Anish in 2002.
Nowadays, five years on, we have Patrick, Yolande, Gus, Naomi, Denise, Chelsea, Libby, Preeti, Li and Tomas, which is 20% of the cast. This is an improvement, it has more than doubled over the last five years, but does anyone think that Preeti, Li and Naomi are just token characters in an attempt to make the show seem more ethnically diverse? Preeti and Li, who were brought in very close together and serve very little purpose in the programme, particularly make me think that they are just there because they are Asian. Does anyone agree? |

They are casting....I believe, for Preeti's family now so my guess is they are introducing her slowly and she will be one of the major players soon.
Li.....I really have no idea what they will do with her character but I don't see her as a token...and if anything Naomi was a token lesbian rather than token ethnic. |
