skype is fantastic, talk to the wife on it daily, it is great and we must save at least 10 p amin on call charges, and i can just talk on laptop through speakers and mic, and then other family members can talk at same time., who ever is in the room at time.

This might be a stupid question but someone told me that people can't call you on a skype phone, I was thinking about a skype phone but it's pointless if no-one can ring you on it.

They can call you from other Skype accounts.

If you want to have a normal phone number that anyone can ring and get through to you on Skype then you need to pay a bit extra for Skype-In.

Skype is one of the dearer VoIP providers and doesn't use an open standard.

There are many VoIP providers out there, that don't charge extra for an incoming number, don't charge extra for voicemail and don't charge as high rates as Skype.

Many people have simply fallen for the hype.

Are just a few, you can either download software to run on a PC, or buy an ATA (analogue telephone adapter) which allows you to connect a standard phone or DECT phone and connect to a router (some have built-in router facility) and therefore make calls without the PC being on, there are also VoIP phones that connect to a router (again, no PC) or the crappy USB things that Skype seem to like, but are fairly poor and require a PC to be on at all times to make and receive calls, or use PC/Laptop speakers and mic - though again does require the PC to be on.

On eBay a PAP2 ATA can be bought for around £14 (ensure these aren't the Vonage locked ones, or ones that were previously Vonage locked) these you connect to the router and all the above service use the SIP standard and allow 'Bring Your Own Device', so is simply a case of entering the required details and away you go.

*Not currently offering a VoIP-In number - but one can be pointed to this service at no cost, if you know where to look. Also no Voicemail is available from the service, however setting up the system with Voxalot could add this.
