I've been avidly following American Idol since the start of this year, and I have to say the talent on series 6 is incredible (expect for a certain dude.... COUGH Sanjaya). And I can't help thinking whilst watching, "Why can't we have something like this here?"

Goodness knows The X Factor has tried. Leona winning did give the show some credibility in my eyes, because for once there was a winner who I think, WITH THE RIGHT MANAGEMENT, could have a long career. Unlike the other two winners, Whom I have forgotten, but I know their first names begin with S . But it still pales in comparison to American Idol, hell even our own Idol fails to the almighty AI. Maybe it is the money at the studio throws at show...... Or maybe it is because American Idol not only produces bonafide megastars, it seems to be more about the talent than ours.

When AI have star guests , instead of just being their to look pretty and smile they actually HELP the contestants with their musical technique and give them good constructive criticism. Here on our show they just sing and piss off.

And the quality of talent just waaaaay outstrips ours. Now no one can tell me we haven't got anyone who can compete with the yanks, because vocally Leona can and she's a Brit. So they are plenty of hot undiscovered talent out there who just don't apply for these types of shows. Instead all we get is girl/boy band wannabes with average voices and gelled up hair....... Honestly is this all we could get? It almost makes me feel ashamed to be British.

Maybe Leona and Ben have opened the door for more soulful people with big voices or even some rock acts to apply this year. But The X factor does have a tacky image compared to AI. It is cheaply produced and sometimes verges on the boarder of being a bit chavvy. So no wonder our best talent don't want to show their faces on it.

Even though there are many elements of AI that I don't like, I still think that the producers should take some notes down on how a talent show should be done. They did try a bit last year, but it wasn't good enough.

Anyways rant over.

Most people actually think this season of AI is the worst to date and I agree to an extent. It does have a few contestants with huge talent (Jordin and Melinda) but overall it hasn't been that great.

People said before AI started that Leona would pale in comparison, would never stand a chance of winning AI and would be shown up by all the "amazing talent". They also said that Leona only looked good because of who she was up against. Well now AI is nearly finished and I've seen a lot of comments saying Leona is as good if not better than the girls on AI and she could hold her own against any of them. Funny how things change.

Well I don't go by other people's opinion...... I go by mine. And I think AI is great this year, not as good as the third, but good anyways.

Leona is the exception. I just whish we have more contestants like her on our one. Even some rock artists.

Personally I think X Factor is superior to AI. We've got Andy, Brenda, Rowetta, Leona, Shayne, G4, Eton Road and Many more. Sure there are many AI greats. But I think XF has on average a higher standard.

For me our X Factor has discovered 3 great talents in the winners. Steve was let down badly by management (to put it mildly), I've not heard much about Shayne recently but really liked him and wish him well, I only hope Leona fairs better with whoever they give her. Can't believe they've whisked her straight over to be promoted in the USA though- why didn't this happen with Steve and Shayne?

I could see all of these three on the AI stage getting standing ovations- ably supported by Rowetta, my 2nd fave in the first X Factor, Andy, Brenda and Maria.

Because as far as I know, they weren't offered contracts. Before Leona even won, Clive Davis had decided he wanted to work with her, win or lose. So as soon as the show ended, they were in talks about her career and what direction they wanted to take.

You cant really expect the X Factor to have the depth of talent of American Idol.
America is a huge country in comparison to the whole UK. Personally i think we should be happy to have Leona who is a wonderful talent and i am proud to say is one of our own.
I believe the Yanks would give there right arm to have a contestant as good as Leona as a contestant on Idol

That gets my vote Ethereal! Very disappointing series - I found the same this year with X Factor- loved Leona and Robert though.

During the X Factor lots of people were saying how much better American Idol was however when I watched this series I didn't think it was that amazing. In terms of vocals, I think both shows were fairly equal.

Where the AI contestants are much better is in terms of stage presence, confidence, etc. In the X Factor quite a few contestants seemed very nervous, and not just in the first shows, but you don't really see AI contestants looking terrified or wooden on stage. Leona's biggest weakness was probably her stage presence.

AI contestants also seem to have less problems singing in tune. Although maybe they get more help from vocal coaches, more rehearsal time, sound engineers that bother to turn the microphones on and at the right volume, etc. And the AI contestants can pick their own songs more than the X Factor ones so this may also help. But whether it was all the contestants' fault or partly the show's too, there was a lot of dodgy out of tune singing on the X Factor.

One thing I prefer about the X Factor is that there are groups too, you just get a bit more variety (and of course we got the MacDonald Brothers!!!)

But AI probably features more genres of music while the X Factor is mostly cheesy pop from 20+ years ago.

Another thing people mentioned during the X factor was that Simon Cowell saved all his best insults for American Idol however he hasn't been that great this year so maybe he has just run out of insults?
