Rita's Kabin
07-05-2007
Monday 7 May 7.30 - 8pm ITV1

Paul (Sean Gallagher) is acting very uneasy around Carla (Alison King) and decides to get into work early. When Liam (Rob James-Collier) and Leanne (Jane Danson) go to investigate why, Paul is really uncomfortable around Leanne, even more so when Liam invites him for a drink with them. In the Rovers, Paul warns Leanne they should stay out of each other's way but Leanne says she isn't going to change for him, much to Paul's dismay. When Liam mentions that Leanne works some funny hours, Paul can no longer holds his tongue and asks for a quiet word with Liam, despite a desperate attempt from Leanne to stop them. Is Paul about to blow Leanne's big secret?
Ken (William Roache) tells Blanche (Maggie Jones) and Deirdre (Anne Kirkbride) that he is going to Denise's house to see his son Daniel for the first time in years. Deirdre pretends to be unfazed by this but Blanche cannot help but interfere. She finds Denise's address on an old letter sent to the Barlow's and follows Ken. Will Blanche upset Ken's first meeting with his son?

Elsewhere Liz (Beverley Callard) meets up with Derek (David Hounslow) for a
secret rendez-vous at a flat.

This episode is written by Peter Whalley, produced by Steve Frost and directed by Terry Dyddgen-Jones.

Monday 7 May 8.30 - 9pm ITV1

Paul (Sean Gallagher) tells Liam (Rob James-Collier) that Leanne (Jane Danson) is a scrubber and he should get rid. When they go back in the Rovers, Leanne and Carla (Alison King) are anxious to know what is wrong with Paul, but Liam tells them he has just had a few too many. With the atmosphere very tense, Leanne decides to leave. Carla is very confused by Paul's odd behaviour. Leanne confronts Paul and tells him if he interferes again she'll tell Carla everything. How will Paul react to this threat?

Denise (Denise Black) ushers Blanche (Maggie Jones) to leave as she tries to tell Ken (William Roache) that he should be thinking about Deirdre (Anne Kirkbride) and not his mistakes in the past. Struggling to find a conversation
with Daniel he tells Daniel that he's not been much of a father but wants to put things right. Denise gives Ken some wine and offers him the sofa. Will Ken want to stay?

Elsewhere, Kirk (Andy Whyment) is fed up with Fiz (Jennie McAlpine) spending so much time helping Chesney (Sam Aston) learn his lines.

Molly (Vicky Binns) gives Vera (Elizabeth Dawn) some tranquility CDs. Vera isn't very impressed by them as they only make her want to go the the bathroom, much to Jack's (William Tarmey) dismay.

This episode is written by Stephen Bennett, produced by Steve Frost and directed by Terry Dyddgen-Jones.

Why is everyone blaming Ken for not seeing Daniel. It was Denise who snatched him and ran off!

Yes and she ran off with her brother-in-law Brian. Who has since apparently left her.

So you are spot on GratingCheese, Denise is the one who should be berated, not Ken.

Does anyone else find Derek really boring? Liz is much better suited to someone with a bit more "life" in them like Jim or Vernon.

What's more annoying still is Ken hasn't mentioned that fact - poor scriptwriting.

Vernon may be lazy, but at least he is entertaining.

Well Kens still had the opportunity to stay in touch with him

As much as I like Blanche, I am finding her presence there irritating.

When exactly? When Denise ran off with Daniel and that fella, it was made quite clear that he would raise Daniel as his own, virtually excluding Ken.

If he really wanted to then he could have tracked him down. I'm not saying it's Kens fault that Denise and Daniel left, but surely he could have found a way to stay in touch and I'm sure Denise would have wanted Daniel to know who his father is

Best stuff came from Denise/Ken/Blanche-all very talented actors made the scenes even better mixed with light comedy and drama-great

Connor stuff was average as was Liz/Derek stuff.

Duckworth stuff was boring...but what can they do with Jack and Vera??

Overall...5.5/10

Pretty boring apart from the Barlow stuff!

Like I said, Denise made it quite clear her new bloke was going to be a father to Daniel so what could Ken actually do? Denise was essentially bringing Daniel up with a new father so if Ken ever made an attempt to visit when Daniel was younger, Daniel would be none the wiser who this person was anyway. It's only recently that Denise split from her fella.

That's partly true.

Initially Denise & Brain ran off to Scotland which I suppose is quite a trek & does make regular contact somewhat difficult, especially when you're working.

Having said that Denise stated that she'd written to Ken when her & Daniel moved back to Manchester so I think it's a fair point to criticise him for not making any attempt to establish some sort of contact then.

A decent start to tonight's double helping of Corrie.

Liked Blanche in her scenes with Deirdre, particulary her "Deirdre Hunt as was" line & her stuff with Eileen in the cab office. I'm still a bit undecided about whether or not it was the right decision to send Blanche off to 'gate-crash' Ken's first meeting with Daniel, but I suppose the writers wanted to put something in place that would make Ken's first meeting with Daniel go less smoothly than it otherwise might do.

Connor stuff was ok, with Paul & Leanne still feeling a bit uncomfortable around each other. Liked Janice's comment about Leanne working odd hours, completely unaware that Paul knows exactly what she's referring to. The cliffhanger with Paul taking Liam outside for a "quiet word" was reasonable enough & should no doubt ensure that viewers come back for the second episode.

Liz & Derek stuff was reasonable enough, although her asking Deirdre for advice on affairs was a bit rich. I suppose you could argue that Deirdre has enough experience to know about all the pitfalls though!!!
Couldn't believe it when Liz said that she'd "never done this before" when any long term viewers will know that Liz hasn't been completely faithful before.

6 and a half out of 10.

I think Daniel is lucky Ken kept away for so long, he is not exactly good at familial relationships is he. But I think Ken can certainly be criticised for not making any effort to keep in touch, he could have persuaded Denise that it was in Daniel's interests to have some sort of contact. But this is the man who did not see Peter and Susan for years and years, allowed them to be brought up by their grandparents, so it isn't surprising.

Sorry I have little sympathy for Ken, he is so self righteous and yet clueless (as Denise observed) about relationships. It's all book-learning and no common sense with you Kenneth

Why? She ran off. She didn't want Ken to know where she was until Brian left her so she wouldn't have told the kid anything, then Tracey conveniently gave her an excuse to contact Ken.

The kid who plays Daniel seems pretty good - he seems to have some personality (unlike a certain Connor).
