Man, that was SO funny.
The first three lines of that song are probably the dumbest ever written.

Oh, I don't know. Alannis Morrisette has written some pretty stupid lines in her time...

Is the guy from the USA?, they certainly seem to have missed the irony of those lyrics.

Oh DEAR.

Irony - Antonym : Avril Lavigne

So whilst pointing out that Americans are not in touch with their irony glands you claim that a teenage American pseudo-punk artist has deliberatly laced a tune with irony despite it being primarily aimed at a demographic of people who aren't even mature enough to comprehend the concept and who also hail from the irony free United States?

The only irony I can see about Ms Lavigne is that of purporting to be non conformist whilst strictly following a dress code and lyrical idiom to nail the teen market straddling the middle ground between N-Sync and Linkin Park.

If you could point out the irony in the song I'd be most grateful.

April Lasagne is the most untalented person. It sickens me that she calls herself punk.
I think I once read an interview where she said "Oh yeah. I totally like my rock music. Uh, this morning I was listening to blink-182 and System of a Down."

Whether you do / or don't like Avril Lavigne, you have to admit that this (the website with the lyrics) is funny!!!

Shes great, good voice, great songs. I dont give a fig about what she says she is or isnt, or how she dresses, or what genre shes supposed to be, or whever she a girl doing blokes music, or whatever.
I like her a lot, and she is far better than most of the rap and r&b rubbish that purports to be music these days, or any one of dozens of US so called 'punk' bands that just rip off 'The damned' etc , and as for modern heavy metal...meaningless noise and grunting, arghh.give me Black Sabbath any day!.

But where's the irony you reckon is in the lyrics to sk8r boi?

Jane Austen produced irony.
Avril Lavigne produces nausuea.

SHE was a girl, HE was a boy, can I make it anymore obvious.

Yes..its obvious, because of HE and SHE. The irony is that it cannot be made any more obvious.
A very subtle lyric,sheer class.

"If you're wanting to impress friends by finding the credibility in contemporary pop music, you'd be better off finding meaning in a Mandy Moore single; the songs are dreadfully cheesy and, well, annoying. As is Avril, obviously. Much of the appreciation of this album (if you're not 12) will come from the irony that you're listening to such an album, to the laughs you'll get lip-synching "Things I'll Never Say" in the mirror while your roommate is out for coffee with friends. It's regression back to the days when you didn't care if pop music was bad, you just wanted some image."

Not my words.

These are though..

That is NOT irony. You're scrabbling around for a hidden meaning that isn't there. I challenge you to find a music review from a credible magazine/website anywhere that contends that any of Avril Lavigne's lyrics contains intentional irony rather than incidental irony cause by the contradiction of what comes out of her mouth and the image she projects.

But the words of TOP GEAR MAGAZINE.

Yes, she's pretty vapid. But the songs are pleasant enough. And i get immense pleasure by replacing the lyric in "Things I'll Never Say" with the line:

"I'll say what i wanna see/I wanna see you go down on me"

Because i definitely would

Of course its Irony. I can decide that for myself, without having a reviewer tell me what to think. I prefer to make my own conclusions. If you disagree fine, I disagree with you as well.

Its lIke the Alanis Morrisette song 'Ironic'. People said she didnt understand irony, because the lyrics wer'nt ironic. but THAT was the irony of the song, the fact it was called 'Ironic' but wasnt .....

Sounds like the worst after-the-fact excuse ever to me. She got busted big time on her lack of linguistic powers, and covered it up with a third-grade excuse "Yeah i was just fooling you all with my unironic song called 'Ironic'!!"

She should just shut up and rename it 'Unlucky' instead.

Me neither. I love the CD and its one of the few I have that I can listen to all the way through.

Short of rape and murder there isn't much an artist could do to put me off their music. I could care less what they get up to / look like.

I still think the site is funny though

god almighty - give her a break?

for her age, whatever her background, she's managed to write some pretty decent tunes and get an album out. she dresses the way her peers dress - so what? what would you expect her to wear? she listens to blink 182 - so what? would it be better if she listened to something a bit more, like, *hip*? man.

shish. some people aren't happy unless they're knocking someone else down.

Well, its rather ironic that the song wasnt ironic. so as far as Im concerned the song lyrics were perfectly justified for the title.
We can carry on playing table tennis if you want, but its always going to end up 20-20.

Does anyone remember this:-

I don't like it after dark,
especially when I'm in a park.
And theres no one else around.
Oh it gives me the shivers.

I don't want to see a ghost.
Its a sight I fear most.
Rather have a piece of toast. (What!!! - ttcook)
And watch the evening news.

Shes a lyrical genius. You will notice that some of the words are just there to simply rhyme. But even in some places it doesn't at all. I must have completely missed something completely ingenius for my poor brain to even comprehend. Especially the bit about her bungee jumping. What was that about.

Maybe here and Bovril Lavigne should right a song together. Maybe have some touching moments in the song about the fridge light not working, and could it get any more obvious.

An ingenious lyrical song is Stings, Shape of my heart. It tells a story of a guy how plays cards, not for money, or respect. But to see how the cards fall and to test his chance.

The spades are the swords of soldiers
The clubs are weapons of war.
The diamonds mean money for this art.
But thats not the shape of my heart.
Could it get any more obvious.

Clever, talks about all the suits and uses the hearts to state his intentions in life. No war, or greed.

He who penned the insightfull lyric

'Do do-do-do Do da da da'

actually he wrote an advert lyric once.

'You can call it lack of confidence'
'So brush your teeth with pepsodent'.
