Finalizing DVD's on Recorder
Jelite

Could anyone answer me this.....

If i finalize a DVDrw on my DVD Recorder (to play the disc on another DVD player) can i still clear and re-write to said disc again.

Im not sure what the finalizing process does to the disc, ive used a DVDr on the other DVD player but would like to use rewritables if possible.

Excellent, i just wasnt sure if the finalizing would permanently
keep the data on the disc.

No, that only happens on a -/+R disc.

Pretty sure you can't.

Once you have finalized a disc you have closed that session, regardless of whether it's a r/rw disc.

I understood it that you could not edit/clear/re-write/ to any disc. Leave the session open (not finalized) data can be added.

Only finalize if you intend to play on another machine.

You can defo un-finalise a RW disc. I've done it quite a few times on my Panasonic recorder. You go into FORMAT disc which wipes it clean for re-use. Only RW's though, not R's.

You definitely can. Otherwise there would be no difference between writable and re-writable discs. But, once finalised, if you want to use the disc again you may have to format it (as in wipe it completely) before using it again. Some DVDRs allow you to unfinalise a finalised rewritable, others force you to initialise it.

Right thanks for the replies, i guess i'll just have to try it and see, i thought i'd ask first rather than wasting a disc (the only spare RW ive got )

Obviously you are using DVD+RW discs.

These dont need finalising to play on other players.

Its -RW that does.

You can finalise a -RW DVD, then erase and re-use it again.

You can't finalize a +RW DVD, you just dont do it with those for some reason. You can re-use if you erase it.

With DVD -R or +R, once you finalise them, thats it the disc is locked and cant ever be re-used. Some modern machines can playback -R and +R recordings without them being fanalized.

I've tried dozens of players ,recorders and PC drives and I have yet to find any of them that play unfinalised write once discs apart from those recorded on the same make drive.

For instance , an unfinalised -R disc recorded on a Pioneer can play and also be finalised on another Pioneer recorder.
