Which mobile phone shops can you take mobiles to, to have them unlocked?

Independants or shops that aren't even phone dealers but sell them 2nd hand even do them. Getting the phone unlocked by the network is cheaper these days. Phone them up to get a price.

Do any of the high street retailers provide this service?

If you go down to your local Saturday/Sunday market there are usually guys with laptops waiting at the mobile phone stall to unlock your phone.

I don't know how much they charge though or if they fry your phone

Virgin told me they will unlock phones for free if you've spent £30 on airtime.

Which suits me fine because I have subscribed for a about a year with an old phone and spent a few hundred £ on airtime, just bought a new phone and they told me I can get it unlocked for gratis. I used my old SIM card in it.

I had a mate who fried his nokia 3210 - he used the wrong type of cable and locked it up totally - my only advice was, "why didn't you ask me to do it for you?"..

..that's unlock it, not fry it

What program would you recommend to unlock a Nokia 3310.

I've got a nokia cd with tons of programs on it, but don't really want to try unless i know it's going to work and not mess up my phone.

I have a datacable, but have only used it for ringtones and logos.

I just took my phone round a back street market stall place and he unlocked it in 30secs, cost £10

Weird thing was I traded my dud 3310 in for a new 3310 on Virgin for 49.99! the guy in the shop didn't seem to be bothered that I was trading in an identical phone. After that I unlocked it and put my old Vodaphone sim card back in

As I understand, its now a criminal act for any "unlocking" or "unblocking" of phones unless you can prove ownership of the said phone and a name and address showing proof of identity (i.e driving license, passport, utility bill etc).

This only stands for the IMEI (International Mobile Identity Number) to not to be changed or altered, not for perhaps if you have forgotten your phone PIN number.......

Hope This Helps.....

This is not the same as removing a network lock.

This refers to altering a phone that has been blocked by a network because it is stolen or changing the IMEI number.

Hope this helps your obvious confusion.......

as I posted on another thread nokia dct-4 phones can be done yourself, download one of the many calc programs that are not available free, enter your imei number and select your network, and type in one of the 7 numbers it generates to unlock.

lots of info about this is available on other forums (try search for gsm-forum on google).
