Shayne set for Variety honour
dianne bourne

9/ 5/2007

HE'S been a pop star for barely two years, but The Variety Club of Great Britain is already preparing a tribute event in honour of X Factor star Shayne Ward.

The charity organisation believes Shayne (pictured) has made such a contribution to showbusiness in that time, that they will hold a glitzy dinner in his honour and make a special presentation to the Clayton lad.

Past recipients include the likes of Dame Shirley Bassey, Irish crooner Daniel O'Donnell and motor-racing broadcaster Murray Walker.

It is believed that Shayne, at the age of 22, will be the youngest ever recipient, and he is said to be 'thrilled' with the news.

Shayne - the winner of The X Factor 2005 who scored a massive hit with his chart-topping debut single That's My Goal - will give an exclusive performance on the night, while leading lights of the showbiz world will make speeches and pay tribute to his achievements.

Shayne and his manager, former X Factor judge Louis Walsh, are now busily drawing up a list of star guests they would like to invite to the prestigious occasion.

Many will attend on the night, while others who cannot attend will be asked to prepare video messages to pay tribute to Shayne.

The tribute comes as fans eagerly await news of a release date for Shayne's new material.

New sound

A new single and his second album was promised in May, but I hear that it has now been put back until late summer as Shayne continues to work on his 'new sound and new look'.

Tickets for the Variety Club tribute are available for fans to buy, although they are set to fly out for the event at The Palace Hotel in Manchester on Saturday, September 8.

Variety Club spokesman Bob Carter says: "The Variety Club of Great Britain is proud to announce it will be honouring Shayne Ward with a special Tribute Dinner to celebrate his outstanding achievements in the world of entertainment and music.

"We also know that Shayne has done a lot of good charitable work helping out young people in his hometown of Clayton.

"He has achieved huge international success through his natural talent and enthusiasm at such a young age and we believe he is the youngest ever person to be honoured by the Variety Club in its 57-year-history in the UK."

A special achievement award will be presented to Shayne on the night before he performs for his guests.

Is it April 1st? I like Shayne, but this can't be right. Most entertainers, have to wait years for a honour like this.

Ah, I understand now, it's the local NorthWest branch, he's from Manchester isn't he? it's still a bit of a kick in the teeth for all those other entertainers, who've been doing the same for years and years.

I like Shayne but good grief! What a surprise to be given such an award. I hardly recognised him with the tributes they were showering on him. I guess he must do a lot of charity work.

Good luck to him. Can`t wait for the new album.

I'd be thoroughly embarrassed if I were him! Surely this is a wind-up?

I doubt it is a wind up. It reads pretty kosher to me. Maybe some string pulling went on? If it does turn out to be a wind up though, then it is just good pr then. Louis and Simon are the kings of pr spin after all.

I hate to think what strings Louis had to pull for this!

I like Shayne, but this does sound ridiculous.
Maybe if he's still going in 20 or 30 years

Yes they should both join Tony Blair on kings of spin!

For me this is totally stupid, what has he done, come back in 10 years time, then honour him, but by then he may be back selling shoes.
