47-50" Rear Projection TV Advice

I am looking to buy an above TV, but have no idea what to go for! Looking to spend £800 max, possibly can stretch to a grand if need be. HD Ready would be a plus, although again, nothing a £30 freeview box or sky box can't fix!

Thanks

Personally I've never been overly impressed by them, but the new Sony ones have a MUCH wider viewing angle than the older sets did.

You appear to be confused about HD Ready?, it's nothing to do with FreeView or Sky - presumably you're talking about not having a built-in digital tuner?. You probably won't be able to find any reputable set without one?, almost all include it now (apart from the cheap tat!).

Yes I am probably confused! Cheers!

Do you know anyone with a Makro card? They're currently selling a Sony KDF50E2010 (50", HD Ready) for around £800 inc VAT.

There's a thread on AVForums with some pretty positive reviews:
http://www.avforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=391681

But to be honest, at £1000 you're almost at decent budget 50" plasma level - better viewing angle, better daylight performance, no bulk and no limited bulb life.

I found this..
http://www.argos.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ArgosBrowseIterator?jspStoreDir=argos&catalogId=10651&FC$Screen%20Size%20(inches)=50&identifier=8559937&langId=-1&Trail=C%24cip%3D49550%3EC%24cip%3D49579%3EC%24cip%3D49585%3EFC%24Screen+Size+%28inches%29%3D50&storeId=10001
which seems ok. Had a google around but can't find too many reviews on it.

Anyone got any pointers?

dont forget resale value if you want to upgrade, you wont be able to give a rear projection away in 2 years time, thats why their discounting the so much.

The sonys (I am a fan) are end of line, the big stores have bought them at over 80% discount, pre vat , I agree no resale value but as for plasma, well you wont require a room heater if you get one.

Also the Sonys have been in the factory stores for a long long time, when Argos & Makro sell them, its manufacturer end of line.

My Opinion only

In 2 - 3 years time I wont be too worried about the resale value really! I just wanted to make sure the sets themselves are good value for money, and not absolute cak!

I am sure the Sony is OK,I have a 16yr old CRT 29 inch,I would say resale value in 3 years for the Rear Proj will be what they discount the new one for, dont think the rear proj will have any real value, like mine.

The specs say 175W and 1W in standby.

It's still listed on the Sony website, and the service manual is only dated August 2006.

Also Nigel as a Sony dealer, you would of course know, I respect your knowledge.

Looks like its end of line stock then, may get it, unless I see anything else I like. Not worried about the inbuilt speakers btw, everything normally goes through the separate amp so tv's normally almost right down all the time.

Does the Sony man think theyll still be selling RPs in 3 yrs time? if the last 3 yrs are anthing to go by, you should be able to get a 50" LCD or Plasma(or whichever has won) for about £500.

I don't personally believe there's a future for RP TV's, when you can get 50" Plasma's for around the £1000 mark, why bother with an RPTV?
