I'm a southerner and live in Hampshire. I don't hear disparging remarks about Northeners like the ones Katie makes. There's always the jokey banter of course, about us being posh etc, and you lot being partial to sheep, but thats never serious

And when I lived in London for three years I didn't hear it either!
Er...in most quarters, that joke is applied to the Welsh, not the North.

Problem with Katie's comments is that they clearly weren't said in jest. She obviously believes northerners are thick. It just shows her complete ignorance. Arguably one of the most successful business men - Sir Terry Leahy is a true northerner.

She thinks she's so superior. It makes me mad!

Katie clearly thinks it's still 1987 and the so-called north-south divide still exists. Thing is, there are more yuppies in Leeds than London in Blair's New Britain. She's truly clueless.

Every week I have cringed at Katie and her malicious comments.

She is either playing a villain deliberately or she is that damn stupid that she has no idea what an idiot she is making of herself.

However, last night she offended me more than ever before.

I'm an northerner but have lived in the south of England for a number of years.

I don't know whether southerners living in the north experience these sorts of stupid comments but too often down here you hear disparaging remarks about anyone who comes from the north. It just depresses me.

In Katie's case though there is nothing i'd like more than to see her tied to a lampost in the Bigg Market in Newcastle on a Friday night.
I don't think you should get offended. I'm from the north and I just laughed. Everything Katie says I take with a pinch of salt cos it's just so funny

I agree. It's just her condescending way rather than some anti north agenda. Also I dunno if it was so much having a go at the north more than it was having a go at this horribly forced concept unfortunatly pushed by northerners (see Vernan Kaye) that is 't' north'. That Katies negative generalisation of 'northerners' is just a reaction to the equally crude generalisation used to create this positive stereotype of how great the north is.

I'll also point out Tre's also said some pretty racist and sexist stuff but similarly find that's his way but I suppose he can get away with it because he's a bit of a geezer and comedy character with the 'common touch' where Katie is a posh woman who we think could look down on us, so when she says things we get ultra defensive.

I don't think Katie's comments are funny though. Its one thing to joke, quite another to disparage someone because you think you're above them.

Katie has yet to give me the impression she's 'joking'.

Regionalism at its worst. I think they would be asking questions about it in parliament if they didn't have some other things to do today.
shades of Big Brother
This forum doesn't seem to have the nutters that whisked up the mass hysteria in that case.
Shame. This time it would be justified.

It was just spite, though and seeing Adam as a big threat. She doesn't say anything about Ghazal (sp?) who is from even further north.

I'm sure there will be an anti-Irish (Kristina) anti-Scottish (Ghazal) comment soon.

I think we've had an Irish one, but some here thought she said orange.
I'm sure she said Irish.

My impression was that she thought Adam was thick. Does anyone have the exact quote?

that's a really interesting point about our reactions to Katies comments and how upset we get and how it is more 'OK' for Tre to make offensive remarks! Don't get me wrong, I think Katie is vile, but I guess it shows that we are all prejudiced in our own way.

I think she wants the media attention so she has more chance of competing in the Grand National.

Paul will be her jockey of course.

I think Tre is every bit as vile, but we've seen less of him lately.

I think people from the North/South who make such comments (nasty ones not jokes) are in the minority. Certainly I have only encountered such hostility on one of my many visits down South where someone described my area (The North East) as an 'industrial backwater' and make jokes about coalmining, shipbuilding etc. However, as someone has already mentioned I think this was a 'class' issue not a North/South issue and have found these comments did not reflect on Southerners as a whole. I would also hope that any Southerner visiting the North would find the people friendly and amiable, but know that this may not always be the case. I don't approve of anyone who judges a person based on where they come from.

What particular comments of Tre's do you think are comparable, though? Although he has been critical and rude about others, my impression is that his comments are based on how that individual is being at that particular time, and they are as likely to be levelled at a man as at a woman (remember Rory?) irrespective of their region of origin.

What horrifies me about Katie is the level of her personal vendetta against Adam. Her wish - not genuine, I'm sure, but nevertheless expressed calmly in front of a TV crew - that Adam would get run over; her great excitement at the prospect of being the person who would see him get sent home; her 'Mr Pinot' dig at his isolation in the house; her constant running down of his ability and attitude. I don't think Tre, or anyone else, has been quite as nasty, spiteful and personal as Katie, and that is what I object to most.

I wasnt defending Katie for a second, I was just agreeing with another posted who pointed out that our responses to the fact that she's a posh girl as opposed to sexist comments by Tre because he's a cockney geezer are very different.

I didnt say Tre's comments were as bad, they aren't!!

I find him quite funny and Katies comments are shocking. to say the least.

I was just making an observation is all.

I just want to clarify that I never meant to sound as though I felt everyone in the south has Katie's mentality.

There are good and bad people in every area.

Also it was the bit about the "northern chums" that really ticked me off.

As for Tre's comments. It is odd, I wasn't offended by Tre's accent on the phone but when the guy sat next to him started doing his own version I found that pretty bad.

It's all in the eye of the beholder, but I don't find any humour in Katie's remarks - she comes across to me as someone who thinks she's being clever, but that she thinks everyone listening will agree with her, not that she is any way sending herself up. Look at the clip on the BBC site of next week, with her sneering at Kristina. She thinks she's scoring points against Kristina, she doesn't think she's being funny.

Can I ask - do people think Katie will come out of this with a TV/media career? Is she going to be turning up on all kinds of reality TV after this? I find that thought so depressing.

It worked for Grace from BB, she was another nasty piece of work, and she made a packet when she left the house.
These TV villain types can do really well.
I'm not sure about Katie as I think she really thinks those things, she seems like a right snob.

I hope not. I don't think she'd be watchable. It helps a media career if you're at least a little bit attractive or have charisma/personality. She isn't/doesn't.

Why? It was in fun and if anything he was mocking Tre.

People mimic accents and the way people speak all the time. Some make a very good living from it.

I guess it's down to the public. I wouldn't watch anything she presented/commented on...she's such a gimp.

Perhaps she could be in a show where the contestants get run over in a car sales lot? Or maybe something filmed on location in Yorkshire or Lancashire?
