Are LCD tv's branded Polaroid any good?
o44wen
10-05-2007
Found this televison in Currys today and was wondering if it was any good?

I am looking for a smallest widescreen LCD with freeview to put in our kitchen and was needing some views on Polaroid before buying.

Should I stay clear?

http://www.currys.co.uk/martprd/stor...ory_oid=-30633

I have a nice Panasonic 23" for my bedroom and would like a tele close to that for the kitchen.

I was also looking at
http://www.currys.co.uk/martprd/stor...ory_oid=-30633
but I have never heard of the brand so not sure how good it is

I have been waiting for two months now for Argos to get the Bush 19" tele in stock but they haven't and probably won't get it in any time soon so I have given up on them and looked elsewhere. There is a very poor range of protable widescreen freeview LCD's

If anyone else has suggestions about any other tele they have found, let me know

Thanks

polaroid are a camera company who have expanded into tv's

LG make almost every lcd panel for lcd tv's on the market

They are indeed a (poor) camera company, but rest assured they have nothing whatsoever to do with the manufacture of these TV's, they're merely a brand name used exclusively on OEM garbage by DSG.

Just because the PANEL is probably made by LG-PHILIPS-LCD, doesn't automatically mean it's a good TV. It's the processing behind it that makes the difference.

Personally, i wouldn't touch either with a bargepole.

Polaroid was a camera company, until it went bankrupt in 2001. The brand name has since been licensed to various companies - such as DSG!

@o44wen, most of the panels used in LCD TV screens smaller than 23" were originally intended for the PC market. Widescreen computer monitors are slightly narrower than widescreen TVs, with an aspect ratio of 16:10 rather than 16:9. Both of the monitors linked to above have a resolution of 1440 x 900 resolution. 1440/900=1.6.

Whichever model you go for I would check that they display 16:9 images in the correct aspect ratio. Many 16:10 TVs seem to vertically stretch 16:9 pictures to fill the screen, and the distortion is just enough to be disconcerting.

well that seems a big no to those two tv's then.

I was thinking that a 23" one is just too big for the kitchen, I just might have to settle for one or just wait until a suitable smaller one becomes available.

Saw a couple of nice ones at 23" around the £400 mark by Samsung and JVC
and this 20" one from Toshiba http://www.electricaldiscountuk.co.u...s.php?pid=5088

Certainly the Toshiba you've linked to and most likely the JVC (model dependant) are just badged Vestel/Beko sets, meaning they're almost identical to a lot of the cheap, no name supermarket models.

There are many manufacturers of LCD panels, Samsung (and S-LCD) are a major one - I've no reason to imagine that Philips/LG are by any means the largest?.

OK finally just went for this one.

Hopefully it will be an excellent choice. Decided to stay away from the cheaper ones in Currys.

Should be delivered in a week or so for £400, a bit more expensive than I was hoping to pay but I will be happy once it arrived and its all hooked up

Personal opinion but i'd rather have a supermarket brand than a Samsung.

Sound quality is diabolical.

Totally agree. Samsung are utter rubbish. I sent back my Samsung LE26R74BDX and replaced with an LG 26LC2R.

The LG is in a totally different league - solid build and excellent picture and sound. The Samsung felt really cheap and nasty, sound was dreadful - lacking any kind of definition and there was backlight bleed on the panel at the bottom, like a ray of light. Another thing I don't like about Samsung products is they all seem to suffer from some kind of lag problem when responding to the remote.

The current crop of Polariods are made by Proview, but aren't rebadged by DSG, mearly distrubed in the UK by them. A quick search on Google will throw up that the same models are avaliable in the US by their respective retailers.

Bad pic, but here's my LG - http://img222.imageshack.us/img222/3...010172bgu1.jpg

Looks superb in the black (none of that cheap looking gloss black going on here), absolutely love it.

Indeed, i really hated the black glossy back panel of the Samsung.

I've got the same LG, awesome, lovely, great TV .

Remote and interface is much nicer, too.

Indeed it does, mine doesn't have a 'Munkeh' though.

One thing i do commend Samsung on is supplying a 'real' manual though.

You could probably pick one up on eBay. I got mine from Tesco a couple of months ago. He came free with the 160 box of PG Tips.

As for the manual, I know what you mean. The full user manual is on the provided CD-ROM. Not that I've ever needed it though.

I'll have a look, thanks!
