Purchased LCD - confused about cables

I received my Samsung LE26R74BDX this morning and I suddenly thought that I haven't got a cable for the high-definition.

I'm not actually sure if I need one because I've only got Freeview (not Sky).

Do I need a cable like this?

You don't need a cable, as you don't have any high-definition source - if you get Sky HD it comes with a suitable HDMI cable. With Freeview there's no HD, and no HD compatible socket on the boxes.

HDMI and DVI are high def grade interconnects. You only need to use one of those if you are linking a High Def device such as SkyHD to a HD-Ready tv.

At the moment, Freeview doesnt offer High Def. If the tv has Freeview "built in" (and you get a signal where you live), the signal will be picked up of the aerial cord - just like the old tv. If you are connecting a Freeview box, you will use a SCART connection, just like with the old tv. Panasonic make a combi DVD recorder/hard disc/Freeview box which offers HDMI output, but this wont provide any upgrade in either DVD/hard disc/Freeview quality as each component equipment inside is limited to normal quality (SD). They have just stuck on a HDMI connection for those who want to use it.

I think I was aware there isn't any HD content on Freeview - remembered reading about it on here.

I've got a Component HD AV cable for my Xbox 360, so I'll be able to try that in high-definition.

I'm not getting a Playstation 3 and there's no chance of me having Sky HD in my bedroom, so the only thing I could really use the HDMI socket for is a DVD player - like this one?

DVDs aren't HD either, therefore it depends if the scaler in your TV is better (or worse) than the one in the DVD player.

Let's see if I can get this right!

DVD players aren't HD but Blu-Ray players are?

DVD player can produce near HD quality but not full?

No, a normal DVD player only gives normal SD pictures, you can buy ones with upscalers inside, which scale the picture up to fit the screen, but your TV already has this built-in - in either case it's only an SD picture, no where near HD.
