Hi all,

I'm thinking of buying an NTSC Wii that can output both component and composite.
I have composite on my TV but it's not as good as RGB Scart and I believe that the US equivalent is component.

So basically, I'm wondering if an adaptor exists where I can plug the Wii's component cables into an adaptor, that I could then plug into the RGB scart on my TV.

Also, am I right in believing that when I buy a HDTV, they have component-in directly?

Thanks,

gaffer

It will cope with NTSC but I don't think it converts to PAL so you'd have to make sure your TV can display NTSC. You could email Keene to clarify.

Expensive though isn't it?, considering Component isn't that far away from RGB, it's only very slightly encoded (and RGB isn't encoded at all).

It certainly is, but I don't think there's anything cheaper! No other solution though if you've only got component out and RGB in. Other than composite of course...

Wow, that's expensive!

Wouldn't something like this work:

http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?...C=SO&U=strat15

I've also found component (3 plugs) to Scart RGB cables but what I would then need is a component in out adaptor.

Something like this:

Can anyone help for the HD question?

I've got S-Video too.

Why not just use a SCART cable?

Because, apparently, the NTSC US Wii doesn't work with the PAL Scart cable.

I'm surprised at that as SCART can carry NTSC and PAL no problem.

I think these are adaptors, not converters. They simply allow component cables to be connected via SCART. If your TV doesn't support component video via SCART then it won't work - it needs to be converted into RGB.

I suspect it's more like the US Wii can't output RGB, as that's a European standard. Can the UK Wii output RGB? If so, why not just buy a UK one!

The US one gets more games, quicker and cheaper.
The virtual console games run quicker too.

There's your answer: buy a Wii S-VIDEO cable.

It may not be quite as good as RGB, but using an external box to converting component to RGB may degrade the video quality - plus many TVs process RGB by first converting it to S-VIDEO first, in which case there would be no difference at all between the S-VIDEO and RGB output.

But as S-video would still have some NTSC encoding, the TV would have to be able to decode an NTSC signal using S-video.

I watch R1 DVDs without a problem, so the TV can accept an NTSC source.

So, you are saying that there is no difference between RGB Scart and S-video?

Which connection do you watch them with?

My Panasonic DVD player has RGB Scart out and can play R1 DVDs.

It also has Component OUT, but sadly, not IN...

The reason NTSC works over RGB and component is because all NTSC colour coding is removed.

That's not the case with S-video in which crominance, carried along one wire goes through modulation to calculate the individual colours.

So, what does that mean?

It means that in S-video, one wire has two of the three colours "mixed" in together. If the signal is being sent is from an NTSC source, these "mixed" colours are encoded in the NTSC format so the TV must be able to decode NTSC (unlikely with most PAL TVs.)

RGB SCART sends red, green and blue separately so there's no decoding that needs to be performed by the TV, which is why NTSC works over RGB on PAL TVs but not over S-video.

Right, but my idea was to connect the Wii to the Panasonic DVD player's S-video in and then through RGB Scart out to the TV.

How inferior would that be to a direct RGB scart or component connection, in terms of PQ?
