Home Cinema system for my TV is it worth me getting
ney
13-05-2007
I got a 26inch stereo surround sound HD LCD TV with built in DTT. Had it just over 5 months now. Is it worth me adding exta speakers to it like an Home Cimema System or just a system to give me all surround sound. I have looked in the argos book but some conncet to a DVD player. Im looking for one that can connect to my TV in living room. Any advice would be welcome. Also dont want to spend over £200 if I can help it with holiday time coming up in next 5 or 6 weeks.

If you want something that's going to sound remotely like a cinema, stay away from Argos...

Go to Richer Sounds, buy a cheap receiver and cheap 5.1 speaker set, would be much better.

Your best option will be to get a good quality AV receiver and then get the 5.1 speakers to connect it.

I got mine from Richer sounds for less than £120 on clearance sale - Don't know if they are in Scotland but they do mail order:

Would make a nice starter system, expandable too as you progress!

There is no Richer Sounds in my area nearest is Edinburgh. Theres just Argos, Comet, Currys, Asda, Tesco, Aldi and a Lidi thats just outside of my town. The stuff in Richer Sounds do look good though. I dont want to Buy one with a DVD players as I already got a DVD player. I have started looking on the Currys and Comet sites. I go on holiday in next 5 or 6 weeks for a few days. So I may or may not wait till I get back and buy something then. Just dont want to buy something that turns out to be not much better than the stereo surround sound thats on the TV.

Can't you order online?

The all-in-one units don't sound good...

If you're not desperate, then wait.

After your holiday you might have more money left over

True I will wait till after my few days away in 5 or 6 weeks time then and get one then. Will give me a chance to have a good look around. I will not buy out of Argos as you said it may not sound good. I was also told ends of last year when I got the TV as posted above not to get a TV from Argos so I never. Seems like some dont like Argos when it comes to the odd electrical stuff.

Not many people do for this kind of thing.

Kettles and toasters, they're perfect.

I was in Asda the day and seen a Durabrad Home Cinema System for just under £30 down from just over £40. Its got 5 speakers and a subwoofer. Also comes with a remote control. I know Asda sometimes sell cheap brands. It said 45w channel output if I remember right. Is this any good.

I have no doubt that it'll not have a decoder built in.

Does your DVD player have 5.1 analogue outputs?

Yes my DVD player has got 5.1 analogue outputs. My LCD stereo HD TV also has audio outputs on the side but not sure if TV is 5.1 analogue though but my DVD player is.

You maybe right and its just over 4 weeks till my few days holiday and just over a week off work. I would like to spend under £500 if I can as I dont want to spend more then what the TV cost end of last year that cost £499. The one in Asda looked ok but was a cheap brand that may sound ok for a little while but sould not lesst maybe.

I have bought stuff from Argos in the past but have been told Argos are not good for the odd stuff and sometimes the Argos book has mistakes. Thats why I never got my TV out of Argos end of last year that dad helped to pay towards. I will look around but dont think I want to spend as much as £500 for a Home Cinema System as TV only cost £499 end of last year. Any thing £400 and under is fine. The one I seen in Asda yesterday looked good and cheap but seemed a very basic surround sound system. One like you may get on some mid range Hi-Fi systems. Its about 4 weeks till my few days holidays away. So I may wait till I get back for when I get back I still got 4 days off work.
