New LCD but can't receive channel 5
pault2006

I've just bought an LCD TV for my bedroom but after scanning for new channels, discovered I can't receive channel 5 or the channel 5 freeview channels.

My freeview reception is through a portable aerial and it's really good.

I was able to get channel 5 on my old set-top box and I can't understand why I can't get it through my TV.

Do I need to do a manual tune?

Make and model maybe helpful.

It's also possible that your freeview box has a stronger tuner, but seeing as you can't get it on analogue or digital, that's strange.

Are you missing any other channels on digital?

(I'm amazed you've finally bought one!)

For those who haven't heard, it's a Samsung LE26R74BDX.

I think I can get it on analogue TV (the picture's barely watchable) but definately can't get it on Freeview.

When I first scanned for channels, I was missing BBC2, Channel 4 and Channel 5 but I've got BBC2 and Channel 4 now.

My transmitter's Sandy Heath - if that's any help.

Awful TV but i'm not going into that.

99% signal problem, 1% faulty hardware (although, being Samsung that wouldn't suprise me!)

That seems a bit harsh on a maufacturer that puts out the most lcd screens, and updates them more frequently than others (and putting them out at a reasonable price).

What have you got against them?
What faults can you list? Just so the rest of us non techys can use when thinking of getting new screens.

Reliability, they're not far from Philips levels!

The sound quality is the worst of any LCD, the power supplies have a tendency to go bang, the backlights commonly fail on their 19" set and their HDMI sockets are tempermental.

I'd certainly not buy one.

Oh, and there's a problem with HD signals jerking on their new R87/R88 series. Nice one Samsung...

Forgot to mention, the above only covers their LCDs, Plasma wise, they're fine.

Thanks for that, you've knocked off two makes I was looking at . I wasn't aware phillips was crap so I'll have to search threads on that.

So I need to buy expensive (sony) or real cheap (and take what faults come on the chin)?

I know you have small sony 20" that you rate but its a bit dear for me at present (unless numbers come up).

Went back to independent dealer (twice) who couldn't find fault. It hasn't done it for a while but wondering if its worth a punt at cheaper brands for bedroom tv (lcd).

Hi ianflo, rest assured that Samsung make very good LCD TV's. I've been researching a replacement for my old 28" CRT and I've not heard anything like what is being said about them in any forums I've been in. Infact the LE40M87BDX is rated as currently being the best 40" LCD at the moment. If you want more then have a look over in this forum http://www.avforums.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=155

Had a 26" R88 for a few weeks now and have noticed nothing of the sort. Fantastic screen.

Also the best looking LCDs out there at the moment.

Ive just returned a 37 R88 due to horrific clouding and backlight bleed and I had the Hdmi judder.

But as LCD's go it looked more than capable and I was just unlucky to get a duff one as most owners seem very happy with them.

I think it is a fault in the software of the set, we have a HD demo running through TVs and the picture judders on the 32", 40" and 46" 1080p sets.

I aren't disputing the picture quality, all i am saying is that the sound quality is poor, as is the reliability.

Everyone has their own opinion, personally i wouldn't buy ANY Samsung LCD.

I'd buy their Plasma sets though, they're very good.

Oh, and i'd never buy one from QVC either, overpriced, very overpriced. Biased by the guys from the manufacturers on stage!

Getting back to the point here. Has the OP tried using a different or outdoor antenna or tried a retune on an alternative transmitter?

The following is a guide to Freeview transmissions from Sandy Heath. Power levels are the same, the differences being in the mode of transmission.

It could be something as simple as your antenna needing adjusted or changed or that their could indeed be a problem with the receiver somewhere.
