Good Place to Buy?
redneon
14-05-2007
I'm after buying the Panasonic TH-37PX70. Most places are selling it for £750 - £850 including the stand but I've been advised to get it from John Lewis as they give a five year guarantee on all their TVs. The thing is, it's £899 from John Lewis and then an extra £99 for the stand which is £250 more expensive than some places.

Any suggestions?

EDIT: I intended to post this in the HDTV forum.

Only at local stores they don't match internet even if its well known stores.

I was after 32" sony but they stuck to their £699 price as it includes 5 year warranty. It was available for £150 less elsewhere (co-op). Have since scaled back ambitions as cash is tight (where does all the money go??).

To be honest, at this rate I'll probably just end up getting it from Dabs for £750 and either take out a separate insurance policy for it or stick is as a named item on my current policy. The only problem with doing that though is that if I do need to claim it'll push my premium up.

Cab or Ped?

If you're wanting it with the Ped then Empire Direct are reasonable.

http://www.empiredirect.co.uk/conten...H37PX70PED.htm (plus £20 for their 'FREE' three year warranty.)

£950 with the Cab.

As has been said go to empiredirect.co.uk .
I have just bought the same TV for £848 with a 5 year warranty that only cost the price of there store card.
Its not a credit card, but if you buy anything over £200 you get a 3 year warranty as you have the card.
For this month only they are doing a 5 year warranty on all Panasonics bought with the £19.99 card, so a good deal.

Plus the TV comes with pedastal, which would cost you an extra £99 at John Lewis.
Ordered my TV last Thursday, got a phone call yesterday, to take delivery today.
Then this morning the driver said he would be with me between 10am & 12, so I am happy with them.
Check out there feedback from customers if you are unsure.

Cool. I'll get it from Empire Direct too, then. The only thing is that I wont be buying it until we move house in a couple of months time so I'll probably only get a three year warranty with it but it's better than a kick in the nuts.

After you've had a bit of a play with it could you post back and let me know what you think of it? Personal reviews are much better than articles

Got mine yesterday and first impressions are very good.

For more reviews and information check out the large thread on AVForums in the Plasma section.

Well got the TV yesterday, at 12.05, guys who delivered it brought it into my front room, undid the packaging, to make sure the screen was ok, and that I was satisfied, so no problems.
I would like to add here, that the Panny comes boxed with 4 plastic atachments, when you undo these the box is lifted off the TV, "which I thought was clever", no lifting TV over box, which can be dodgy .

The pedastal came in a seperate box, so had to put that together first, this by the way it is heavy, and all metal, really solid, and it also swivels .
Next got the wife to help me lift the TV onto the 2 mounts on the stand, then just added 4 more screws done.
This also comes with cable ties, which clip on the back of the TV so there handy.

Connected my DVD upscaler with just HDMI, then connected my V+ box, also with HDMI, but had to do that with scart first, locate HDMI, then you can take the scart off after.

Switch on.
First checked all the settings, all of these are about halfway, brightness, contrast, etc, so really I wont do any adjustments until I have run the set for say 100 or 200 hrs.
Did put it into HDMi mode through my V+ box and widescreen.

Then went into panny setting for cinema , oh and sound set to surround which is great.
I would say after messing around it took about half an hour to get all the connections etc, up and running.
The panny just picks everything up so easy, and the menus are easy too.

The picture is awsome, and even better on BBC HD, seeing drops of sweat on someones forehead, and picking out tiny detail.
Even on normal TV the picture is great,"although most of my viewing is done through cable".

I did have an Evesham 37" LCD, but sent it back, and got a refund, as the set had problems picking up HDMI.
Comparing the two, the colors are more natural with the Panny, and everything seems more sharper, with more depth to the images.
I spose this would be down to the more near black a plasma can show.

Sometimes when you watch news channels you get some people who look more tan, or sometimes slightly red, but thats the camera there using, and the way light is hitting there lens, so to me thats not a problem as most of that is live.

I have tried some DVD's, first I put on was Saving Private Ryan, the scene at the begining where they hit the beach.
It was like watching a different film, the water was so realistic, and colour was amazing, along with the DTS sytem I have as well,........." I was there" .
It seems my old DVD colection has found new life .

Next I tried Gladiator, the battle scene at the begining, again awsome colours, and in depth dark colours, along with greens, just cannot fault it.
No motion blur, no ghosting nothing, a real treat to see Panasonic have built a solid TV, even the back of the TV is a black metal not plastic.

My set sits on a TV cabinet, with the back to the window, so would advise setting up so that you dont get reflection onto the glass screen.

I just wish I had bought the panny first instead of the evesham.
All in all a very trouble free set to get up, and going.

Oh, and for the benefit of the guy who asked about the purple snakes, "none".
TBO this TV is the best I have come across.
Only thing I do see is pink elephants, ........"after I've had a few".

My personal preference would be for the Toshiba.

I have gone for the Panny and after having owned 2 LCD screens I know I have definitely made the right choice.

HD pictures are not just about resolution. By itself resolution is just one small element among other things such as black levels, motion handling, clarity, picture noise, colour reproduction, response times and viewing angles.

I am surprised people don't consider these things more seriously. They seem to think - Full HD must be better! Not necessarily the case.

Only your eyes can decide.

I watched Monsters Inc on SD DVD (upscaled) yesterday and it was perfection, then I watched HD Movie on Anytime with Jennifer Anniston and the screen shots of Chicago at night were truly brilliant - NO LCD could have done this.

If I was a gamer or used my screen for my PC then I may have stuck with the LCD's but for watching TV and films - A Big up for Panny Plasma.
