Will anybody on AI2 become a major world star?
grant1
15-04-2003
Personally, I can't see it.

I don't see anybody from this series having the "x" factor to become massive worldwide.

Reuben has the best voice I think, but I can't see him becoming a worldwide 10 million or more album seller like Eminem, Avril, Nelly or Norah Jones even.

Frankly, there are better voices like Whitney, Celine, Mariah etc who can't do that now.

Clay is pretty good, but won't sell outside the US, and while the others will have careers in some form from this, I just can't see them being on a par with the best that's already out there.

Christina Aguilera, for example, might have her critics about a lot of issues, but let's face it, she has a miles better pop voice than anybody here.

Nope

I probably will stop watching if the final three is Clay, Ruben and Josh as I don't like any of them (okay I will ANYWAY but I don't really care who wins)

Nor me. Do you think we'll get excited over Pop Idol 2? I was absolutely addicted to the 1st series, but I'm just wondering if we're all getting a bit cynical about these types of shows now?
16 weeks to go til PI2!!

Clay and Reuben I would agree but having heard Josh's appalling versions of "Celebrations" I don't think he's that good anymore.

Ooh do you have an exact date for when Pop Idol 2 starts then?

I'll love it

Mid August according to Heat. All the gang are back, but no mention of Kate Thornton. I really hope she carries on over on ITV2.. much as I love Hayley, I think she proved on PopRubbish, that she isn't a presenter. Not that there's any mention of her being involved. I just thought I'd register my disapproval of anyone taking over from Kate.
Anyone know what Laura's doing? Is she presenting still?

I like watching the backstage stuff - them learning the songs. They should do it Fame Academy style, with each group of ten living in the same house for the week and showing it all on ITV 2.

I doubt any of them will make it outside the US - I mean, how much have we heard from Kelly Clarkson? I think that was her name - see, I can't even remember. She's done nothing outside the US.

I think PI2 will be dull after Fame Academy. Seeing that lot rattle around in that big house, week after week and writing some great songs of their own while they were in there, PI2 will seem like another production like of karaoke teenagers... just look at Popstars the Rivals, that was abysmal.

I don't see any of them making it here in the US either. REALLY making it ... not just selling some albums. I honestly can't see myself buying one of their CDs. Maybe Clay or Trenyce. I was a Kelly Clarkson supporter, but I have no desire to buy her CD (not yet, anyway). She hasn't been able to drop her title as "the girl who won American Idol."

What about Will Young? Has he shed his Pop Idol title? He won a Brit didn't he?

Oh yes. Will will shed the Pop Idol tag quicker than Gareth will.
The great thing about Will is that the guy has a unique sound. As many people will love him as hate him. Pop he isn't -think Norah Jones crossed with Nat King Cole (well the analogy works for me).
So I dont expect Will to carry on with single chart success, but I hope he WILL have longevity as his fan base is far older than teenybopper type heart throbs like Gareth.
I'm not dissing Gareth, because I really liked him and have a lot of respect for his talent- I only wish he'd got Will's strong self belief and wouldn't let Simon dictate his career so much.

Hmm.

I think you're being a bit hard on PTR, Tally. It might not have been to your personal taste, fair enough, but by the only objective comparison we can make with a series on at the same time(Fame Academy, you might have heard of it!), it had higher viewer figures and the Girls Aloud single alone sold more than the four FA singles combined. And the second single is predicted to do just as well!

Sorry grant. You're right, I never really got into PTR. I was glued to FA.
I've got to admit I was astounded by Girls Aloud. Crap name for a group, but terrific record. I love it and am looking forward to the second! Pop at its best.

I wouldn't say Will has quite got rid of the tag yet !

Anyway on Kate Thornton - actually read in 3am the other day it had something about her doing something, i've forgotten what.. but anyway it mentioned that she was gearing up to present Pop Idol in the summer. So the lovely Kate is back for series 2 yay

Hmmmm but do you think the PTR bands will outlast the FA bunch? I seriously doubt it. OTV already look like they're over, they are a joke to most people now. I can't see Girls Aloud lasting too long either. They will all go the same way as Hearsay before too long - the sooner the better in my opinion.

The FA bunch - particularly Ainslie Henderson - have the potential to last. Just look at the tours. The PTR tour got cancelled because nobody bought tickets. The FA tour had to add extra dates - including Wembley Arena - because it kept selling out.

Ultimately it's album sales that count. I bet you Ainslie (love him) and David Sneddon (even though I can't stand him) will sell many more albums that the PTR bands will.

I think people are getting fed up with stars from reality TV who sing covers, and sing songs written by other people and chosen by their record company. Another reason the AI2 bunch won't make it here. No genuine individuality.

Welcome to the forums Becks.

Hmm -love Ains- Hate Davy! Sounds like someone after my own heart! Hope to see you on the FA forum, knocking away at Davy's credibility as a good songwriter!

I think Girls Aloud are stick around for a while actually.... they're better than Atomic Kitten anyway

Personally, I don't think anyone from either FA or PTR will become a major star like Eminem, Avril or Nelly worldwide.

I think Girls Aloud and certainly David, and probably Sinead will do well in the next couple of years, but I don't see that something special that will sell albums from Berlin to Bangkok!

Will they all still be big in the UK even five years down the line?

I doubt it , but who can tell!

Girls Aloud are already a big hit in several countries across Europe, I believe SOTU has done very well in Holland at least
Evie

The Girls Aloud record was such phenomenally good pop that it was guaranteed to be a huge hit, and I'm sure the second will go the same way-I doubt they'll be doing a Hear'Say anytime soon! I think their demise has given the management and record companies behind the reality TV lot a good kick up the rear and made them realise that releasing shoddy and badly manufactured records won't work for any longer than 6 months, and certainly won't give them the long-term album profits that they want.
People will buy songs they like irrespective of where they come from, as proven by Liberty X's sudden comeback, so with the AI people it could be too early to say whether they'll actually break internationally...none of them have enough star quality to be memorable in their own right rather than for their songs at the moment though, IMO, if that's actually comprehensible(I shouldn't be thinking on Easter Sunday afternoon! )

girls aloud better than attomic kitten ..no wonder you dont like josh you have hearing problems ...attomic kitten are 150% better than girls aloud,,one true voice probably would have beaten them if they had released the right side (the b side at xmas would have sold a lot more records)
