[quote=FallOutBoy;37362245]I wouldn't class The Beatles as a rock band, tbh. Even if they were they DEFINITELY do not deserve #1 best rock band. They are unbelievably overrated.[quote=FallOutBoy;37362245]

The Beatles? Overrated??? OMG What planet are you on! Listen to the White Album, listen to I am the Walrus! And the whole of Magical Mystery Tour, and Sargeant Pepper. Then listen to all the stuff most of the 'rock' bands churn out these days and ask youself who influenced them!!!

Queen, for sheer dare, diversity, innovation, talent and often heartfelt lyrics too. Also for Freddie, greatest frontman ever, RIP

I can't believe someone insulted "seaside rendevous" earlier, that is a masterpiece. I love all their music, early middle and late.

Go see Muse live, then come back and say they aren't a rock band.

Agree. Someone's just being stupidly snobby; Muse ARE a rock band Im afraid.
There always has to be one who belittles other peoples opinion though.

why dont you listen to the people who were there?... the beatles were never considered rock, that tag emerged after the beatles had split. the beatles were the greatest ever pop group...

there were far 'heavier' tracks then those around... the kinks 'you really got me', rolling stones 'paint it black', yardbirds 'happenings ten years time ago' and 'over under sideways down', hell even dave dee, dozy, beaky, mick and tich had 'hold tight', far far rockier/heavy then the beatles.. but they were never called 'rock'.”

speaking as one who was there
as you say, the term 'rock' wasn't around

there was a whole lot of stuff in the general ragbag label
pop
from 'ken dodd' to 'the pretty things'

there was a bunch of stuff we listened to that clearly wasn't chart music
the folk revival, dylan
cream, john mayell
the west coast psychedelic bands, quicksilver, the dead etc
and people like the velvets, captain beefheart

but if i'd been asked to define which bands where 'pop' / 'rock'
in the modern sense, then the beatles where rock
they started out with a basic set of rock&roll, r&b and soul
and did more drugs than you could shake a stick at
before most bands found out there was life beyond warm pints of bitter
Sorry

For me, Led Zeppelin are the quintessential rock band, so I'd put them in 1st place (even though they aren't my fave band).
I'd put Pink Floyd at number two, followed by the Who and then the Beatles and the Rolling Stones.
Honourables mentions to Genesis, Jethro Tull, Yes, The Kinks, Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton.

For me the top three are:

2. My Chemical Romance
3. H.I.M
But I can tell you now, the majority of people would not agree with this!”

Not surprising given two of them are some of the worst groups in recent memory. You'll feel silly in 18 months when you don't listen to MCR anymore for writing those words.

and therein lies the problem... do you alter the terms used then to suit todays definitions? they were all pop groups, as you say... the beatles did some rockier numbers true, they took drugs... so what, they all did! but i cannot call the beatles rock (even though they were inspirational) any more then i can call them a boyband.. the beatles were a pop group, led zep were rock!

Oh get over yourself. Bellamy, Flowers and Followill know more about rock music than you will ever hope to. As a previous poster said, go and see Muse or The Killers live, then come back and say "oh, they are a mediocre indie pop band".

Anyway, back on topic, my favourite rock bands are:

1. Oasis
2. The Killers
3. Queen
4. The Beatles
5. Green Day
6. All-American Rejects
7. Muse

My favourite rock band of all-time has to be Guns N' Roses - they mastered hard-rock, just the perfect combination of individuals.

Although looking at this from a musical history perspective, it's hard to look at Led Zeppelin and say that they weren't anything short of staggeringly brilliant. They did more for rock and metal than any other band I can think of; while I love The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, neither of them specialised in pure rock as well as Led Zeppelin did. Black Sabbath of course should also get a mention for heavy-metal!

That's like saying Bob The Builder should be in the rock n roll hall of fame for getting a no. 1 single in the charts... The first four Ramones albums are unbeatable for 'old punk' and their 'It's Alive' release is still the best live album I've ever heard.

During the 90s the Ramones were like the Beatles in S. America but then, what does it matter?

The Pistols got infamous through controversy rather than song-writing ability. They were basically the Marilyn Manson of their day.

I was going to challenge this but then saw your user name and realised you must have only discovered 'proper' music within the last 4 months. I'll give you a year to learn the error of your ways and apologise to the board. In the meantime, check out a punk band called BAD RELIGION who had the 'Lennon and McCartney' song-writing duo of American punk music.

your point on the ramones is largely a matter of opinion, id suggest that they didnt connect with the uk audience the way the pistols did because they were american. the pistols took the sound and made it relevant to us, the young uk audience. its nowt new, many of the 60's r & b acts took an american sound and anglacised it successfully ... the stones, animals, yardbirds...

i wasnt a pistols fan because they were controversial, au contraire, it put me off them until i listend to what they were saying. (both through music and interviews).
