I am thinking about purchasing this, however, I am wondering, are there any HD channels or HD movies that I can get, seeing as it comes with a HDMI slot?

Afraid not. Well not yet - not sure what future plans are. There is a page in the settings that says something like 'Number of VOD streams SD/HD: 3/1'. Not sure what that actually refers to though.

The HDMI out of the box is just upconverted SD content at the moment.

Thanks to Ofcom I can't see any HD content coming over the terrestrial way, and the current broadband speed wouldn't be fast enough. However, who knows what will happen in te future. At a guess, BT's 21CN will be fast enough to support downloading HD content.

Out of interest. If BT had HD content on demand films now, and you had the choice of which to rent. How much more than £2.99 would you be prepared to pay for the extra definition?

But you will never get HD encoding to the same file size as current SD.

In just over 1 years time, 24 Mbit/s ADSL2+ will be rolled out, which will provide enough speed for HD content.

Personally i'd be happy if they could find a way to let HD stuff download in the background. Allowing you to watch it once downloaded.
You can download HD films from xbox live in the US (to rent) which seems like a similar idea.

I think most of our current broadband speeds would be adequate for that, just not for streaming!

It could be a massive selling point if they were able to offer some HD content. Won't hold my breath for anything happening in the next couple of years though.

BT do offer some movies in HD but they do need to download in the background before you can watch them, they tend to be about £4.99 each although this does vary.

If you go to the BT vision website they list the HD movies that are available

you can download certain films in hd on bt vision, and some tv programs although they are generally the nature/animal type, u do download them in the background, and you dont get charged for it till you actually watch it
