anyone know where sharp tv/s are made.??
have a 3 year old one, 32 inch crt. just lost power to the tube,
has sound but no light on the screen.
are they worth the money. and what reliability rate are they,??

Mines (42" Aquos) is made in Taiwan.

A CRT 3 years ago will most likely have been made by Vestel, not Sharp.

Yes, Sharp started buying cheap Vestel sets a few years ago, however they were probably better sets than the previous Sharp ones? (you have to go back to 1995 to find the last decent Sharp CRT set).

To answer the original question though - Vestel are made in Turkey!.

Vestel seem to make everyones tv's (and pvr's) looking at this and other threads. Why don't they just bring out their own tv and pvr (while saying they make everyone elses)?

think it is this model..........Sharp 32LF92H.........ok


came as a package, with dvd player, hifi....and speakers...surround sound.

i know grundig are made in poland, and are reliable sky boxes and tv,s.

The 28LF and 32LF sets are Turkish Vestel's, and were the last 'Sharp' CRT sets sold - Sharp stopped all CRT production, and switched purely to LCD.



Poland?, I didn't know 'Grundig' were ever made in Poland?.

A number of points about it:

Grundig Sky boxes were made in Wales, but were discontinued a number of years ago - and the facility (and the rights to make Sky boxes) was sold to Thomson. This was in an effort to stave off bankrupcy. Shortly after this, still trying to prevent bankrupcy, the right to use the Grundig name in the UK was sold to Dixon's Group (presumably for a limited period?). Dixon's used the name on their cheap sets in place of the Matsui name they had used for years.

Next, Grundig went totally bust - end of Grundig!.

For a few years Dixon's Group used the name, then presumably their rights expired?, and the name was bought by a consortium of Alba and Beko - these continue to produce cheap equipment with the Grundig name on it, presumably make by Beko in Turkey.

So Grundig Sky boxes were good, but ceased years ago, and Grundig TV's were good - but they went bust years ago as well - only cheap gear has used the once proud Grundig name since then!

Got a Grundig in here for repair made in Austria (I'm assuming it's has Philips chassis as it has orange and blue Scart sockets) and another made in Slovenia.

As Nigel say's the real Grundig's are no longer.

'Real' Grundigs were usually made in Austria, a Solvienia made one is probably not a Grundig?.

Easy way to tell, near the model number on the back there should be a chassis number CUCxxxx (CUC is Compact Universal Chassis) - and and real Grundig (unless it's SERIOUSLY old) will have such a chassis number.

Have seen a Wharfdale 20" lcd set reduced in argos that looks similar to a Toshiba (Wharfedale L1911W-A 19in HD Ready).

Apart from not having freeview, specs look ok. Are wharfdale any good?

Or is this another vestel makes eveybodys sets thing and the company puts their badge on??

Would like freeview in but can get a cheap digibox if the lcd set is ok.

But spec sheet shows good contrast, brightness, and connectivity, or is that all made up?

Looks remarkably like toshiba 20" (just minus freeview). If its same gear as Toshiba (vestel) it should be reasonable??

It should be a decent TV.

Never buy from specs alone though, go and try and see one set up.

The smaller Toshiba's (23" and below) are Vestel, yeah.

It'll be a different set though, as the Toshiba's aren't HD Ready.

I don't think the label on a product amounts to a hill of beans these days.

There's so much re-branding, and making for other makes, it's all a bit of a fallacy that one brand is any more reliable than another.

Just need to find an argos with one on display then!

They're not known for their wide range of tv displays and looking at other threads don't cough your cash back easily.

At least with other retailers you have a big selection to look at - a wall full usually.

Yes, but I'd want to see how it handled freeview, sports and stuff.

I don't think they'd be keen on hooking me a freeview box to lcd to see how it copes (especially at a busy time)

I wonder what stuff is about to come out from manufacturers? They'll all be freeview, with better screens and connectivity no doubt.

Do retailers change to new stocks at certain times of year (like clothes shops do, but less regularly of course).Anyone know what times of year these are (apart from January obviously), and if its worth waiting for new models?

I know Currys have strange price tickets (ending in 97/98 pence on sticker) on discontinued / about to be replaced gear.
