Sony, Panasonic, Toshiba - probably the best three, in that order.

However, none of them make CRT sets any more.

For that matter, none of them are as good as there were in the past, but the prices aren't as high either!.

Why should it matter where an item is made?

FWIW, the Toshiba's are assembled in the UK.

Philips used to be a good make at one time not sure if they still are. Ferguson (now called Thomson) was also a good make at one time. If its a good cheap make you are looking for then thats Goodmans.

No, Philips are shockingly poor.

Thomson, yeah, decent middle of the road stuff.

Goodmans is just a brand name though, so it could be anything inside there!

I can't actually think of anything domestic that's made in the UK.

There's plenty of high-end HiFi equipment but other than that, not a clue.

Sony/Toshiba TV's are assembled in the UK, meaning that all the parts are shipped from their factories in China/Taiwan/Korea etc and simply stuck together over here.

Same thing now applies with Hotpoint, since they've been bought over by Indesit (Italian manufacture), the same parts are shipped over here and built here, just like a jigsaw. Another case of crap with a quality name on...

About 10 years ago, they were probably the best in the price point, Bosch and Miele are better, obviously, but price point dictates that they should be.

Now they're basically Indesit's with a different panel on.

Thomson has sold off most of it's consumer products to a Taiwanese company hasn't it?

Ferguson was a brand name that Thomson owned and used on some products, it now appears in Currys making me think that Currys bought the right to use the name on their own products (like their delightful Matsui and Logic 'brands')

Not sure, i've seen a few Thomson TV's recently that are still definitely Thomson.

What Is An “Old” TV ?

This section is dedicated to the lady who phoned us ordering some user instructions for her three year old Grundig widescreen TV. That particular make has been a “badge engineered” product for the last five years or so (Dixons bought up the brand name, they`ve also got the Ferguson trademark) but since we know the cross reference we were able to supply the relevant operator guide.
Apparently Dixons (or Takeaway Currys Digital or whatever they call themselves these days * ) had told her “it`s an old one, we don`t keep the instructions for them anymore”.
Now I accept that I`m one of those people who thinks every car newer than a K plate (and
I mean the old K plate) is new * but anyone who thinks that ladies Grundig TV was “old” does not know what the hell they`re talking about. My own television is over 15 years old, still gives a picture to blow away any flat screen and it`s not bleedin` old, I`m a TV engineer so I know better than any salesman. They can take their built in obsolescence consumerism and shove it where only a colonoscopy is ever going to find it again. If any smarmy wet behind the ears sales assistant at Dixons had tried to tell me that my three year old set was old, I`d have told him to get back to his Playstation or (better still) try and get out a bit more. To me “old” implies that the performance of something has deteriorated or it`s reliability is suspect. The former can be easily checked (see CRT failure) and the latter is not just a function of age, the conditions that a piece of electronics are kept in are
probably more important. There is certainly no particular age at which this accelerates.
If it`s got a good picture and it doesn`t break down then it`s not old.......

Thought so, it made me wonder.

I personally consider anything around 9 or 10 years old to be old, but at the rate that technology is advancing, it's less now.

Sony sets are assembled in Spain, actually in Barcelona, Sony did (may still?) have a plant in Wales, but it almost never made sets for the UK market.

Hotpoint were crap long before the Indesit take over, historically they were the most unreliable white goods you could buy!. We used to be a Hotpoint Centre, but dumped them years back - it was just too expensive, and too low a quality. We've since sold mainly Bosch, which has been pretty good - however, we noticed last year that a delivery had a shipping sticker on from China! - Bosch have never mentioned it, and even refuse to confirm they are now manufacturing in China!.

Bosch actually stopped making their budget stuff in Germany a couple of years ago and moved to Spain and Poland, only recently have they gone to China.

The transit bolts on the budget (WAE) Bosch made in China are now red

I'd heard that the components inside Sony and Samsung are often from the same source.
I think samsung make excellent products right across the electonics spectrum.... from mobile phones to TVs.

Sony/Panasonic quality without the price premium.
