I agree with you about the campness - after working in the theatre it must be easy to pick up the mannerisms and voice inflections while being straight.

Exactly - John Barrowman and Graham Norton both make no attempt to hide their sexuality. And trading in your wife for a younger (female) model is classic heterosexual male behaviour - as far as I can see gay married men (like Kenny Everett and Michael Barrowman) tend to stay with their marriage of convenience until they come out of the closet - what next an 'Is Graham Norton straight'? thread

Even today I'm sure there are men in musical theatre who pretend to be straight when they're gay.

ALW is certainly camp but is a 'ladies man'. Goodness knows how! His daughter, btw, is stunningly beautiful. I could not believe it when I saw her!

I think it is pretty sad that in this day and age people can be so narrow minded to think a persons sexuality is even worth discussing!

This thread along with 'The Sexuality of the Josephs' thread display a horrendous level of ignorance. I would hazard a guess from the style of writing that a lot of the posters are quite young - which makes it a sad indication of what is going on in schools and colleges. In the year 2007. Makes you despair.

For those of you who no doubt will tell me to lighten up, as you were keen to do on the other thread, I suggest you may like to hear about a good friend of mine whose son was labelled 'camp', 'gay' etc etc at the age of 11 by his classmates who no doubt thought it was all 'a bit of fun'. Whether he was homosexual or not was not the problem - but the remorseless pointing of fingers, suggestions, innuendo and labelling drove an eleven year old boy to attempt suicide. Not so funny.

Better to live and let live and stop speculating about something you obviously have very limited knowledge about.

Unfortunately there seem to be a minority of people who automatically assume that because a man is very intelligent and sensitive that he must be gay.

How sad is that?

I can quite understand why, even in this day and age, some gay men do take on the cloak of respectability by marrying a woman to protect themselves from public speculation. But it is more a sad indictment of those who cannot let others live their life as they feel happiest and instead cause them to be secretive.

I am not for one second saying that that bullying and discrimination on the grounds of sexuality isn't truly repugnant, but I'd say the the majority of the action on the 'sexuality of the josephs' thread comes from posters with crushes (straight and gay), who want to find out if their josephs fit?

I've heard a lot of rumours from gay male friends - that X who appears to be straight and is supposedly happily married is actually gay - because he slept with a friend of a friend of theirs. I take this with a pinch of salt especially if the guy is really hot - there is always going to be fantasy and speculation which turns into 'fact' ...

Exactly and flirting is just flirting, fantasising is just fantasising.
I think John Barrowman is one of the sexiest men on television, but I know that I am the wrong sex for him. I was happy for him when he got "married" to his partner. Equally when he was on Saturday Kitchen, I found his flirting with the gorgeous (and as far as I know straight) James Martin really amusing. People are going to talk about sexuality as it's a huge part of all our lives. It's better that than being hidden away as it was in the days of Rock Hudson etc. In the words of the Bard of Barking Mr William Bragg

It is still obviously quite a big issue. I saw George Michael saying how he wouldn't advise gay pop stars to come out because of what they have to put up with. Also Parky said the switchboard was jammed for two days with people complaining about David Walliams giving Will Young a kiss and flirting with him.

However, I don't think ALW is gay, and I don't equate gay with camp - although I suppose there is a correllation.
