*SPOILERS*
Last night's theme was Billy Joel songs, and I was really looking forward to seeing Billy Joel sitting in the judges panel. No such luck. They had Motown legend Smokey Robinson sitting there. Why would they have another guest judge sitting there when all the songs were written by one other artist? Stupid. They did have clips of Billy Joel giving background info about each of his songs the contestants had chosen to sing. That was the only interesting part of the show for me. Smokey Robinson was blander than Paula as a judge, if that's possible. He does have amazingly beautiful eyes that are mesmerizing. I guess I never paid attention before, but he must be half black-half white because he has light eyes. Useless information. Anyway, I was crossing my fingers that these contestants weren't going to ruin Billy Joel's amazing songs.
The first contestant up was Kim C., and she did "It's Still Rock and Roll to Me." I thought it might be a good one for her voice and rock singing style, but she was just OK. I didn't hate the song on her like last week's "Everything I Do," but I didn't really like it either. She might squeak through another week, depending on the votes. I just can't tell anymore.
Next up was Ruben, and he did "Just the Way You Are." I really love this song, and I just wasn't feeling him in it. He doesn't have a bad voice, but I think this was his weakest performance so far. Simon threw in the best comment of the night when he told Ruben that he needs to get away from singing everything like Barry White each week. Exactly! That's the reason I don't love Ruuuuuuuuubeeeeeeeen like everyone else. He's alright, but no huge love for me. I can see he has a recording career ahead of him, but just not really in the genre of music that I listen to. I'll find him on the easy listening radio channel.
Kim L. was third, and she did "New York State of Mind." I wasn't expecting great things from her with this song, but she did a fantastic version of it. She looked better than she had in weeks because she covered up her hips (sorry, had to say it), and her voice sounded great with the way she turned the song into her own. I put in some votes for her.
Carmen, Carmen, Carmen. What was she wearing? It never ceases to amaze me how these kids slip through the cracks with their fashion each week. She had on a baby-T with some green strapless dress. To top it all off, you could see that she had pimples on her face that they tried to cover up with make-up. I normally like her look, but not last night. She sang "And So It Goes," and it was horrible. I didn't like it from the very first sentence. I swear, she squeaked through the past couple of weeks, but she better go home this week because it would just be a tragedy to keep her in the competition. She's the Nikki McKibbin of this season's show now.
Josh was up next, and he said in his clip before he sang that he wanted to show America a different side to him. I guess there was a Billy Joel song that had been covered by a country singer, and he said he was not going to do that one because everyone expected him to do it. He decided to sing "Piano Man" and he did it without all the country sounds that we've been hearing the past few weeks. I can only say it was OK, but I was so happy to get a break from his country songs that I didn't care.
Trenyce came next and sang "Baby Grand." I think her voice generally sounded good, but she really looked and sounded like Whitney Houston trying to sing Billy Joel. I don't think she pulled it off well. Her voice sounded pretty good, but I just wasn't buying it. Miles above Carmen though.
Clay came out last (no pun intended
), and he sang "Tell Her About It." He said he decided to sing an up-tempo song instead of a ballad. The beginning of the song was iffy, but I really liked it when he got to the up beat part. Good enough to keep going. Simon made a funny critique when he said that he liked Clay better with his eyes shut. He meant that in a good way (of course) because he said that he likes listening to Clay but the theatrical facial movements have to go. Backhanded comment.
My picks for the bottom three are Carmen, Kim C., and possibly Trenyce. I just think Clay and Ruben are going to be safe for a while. I think Kim L. will only be in there if she hasn't picked up any new fans recently. I think Josh will still ride the Marine vote, and that's all it is at this point. He has been less than spectacular the last few weeks. That's my opinion for now, so we'll see what happens tonight!

Well at least one of the blondes are gone. As usual I'm having trouble accessing the AI boards, so I'm not sure who was in the bottom 3, please say Josh was
And Ben, if you need to talk about your loss- feel free. Always glad to be a shoulder to cry on!
What a fiasco. How the hell did Carmen stay? For the first time ever I thought Kim C was OK, but Carmen was embarrassing awful. I hope Simon feels suitably gutted for putting her through. She must feel dreadful as she's so obviously out of her depth.
