We aren't all born with the accent ALW requires for this role - they are always commenting on diction which may result in a few words being over-pronounced by our Northern contestants. You can hardly compare Lewis' mouth shapes to the awful red-eyed, grimacing, blubberly mess that was Daniel last night?

You have to remember that we're seeing close-ups on TV, but they're auditioning to appear on stage - to some extent over-acting is needed so that things have a chance of coming across to those sitting further back. I've only sat near the front a couple of times in the theatre (when there haven't been enough people to fill the balcony!) and the performers really do look as though they're overdoing their actions.

Erm...what?

They had to put on an act! What sort of skills are you imagining that used?

I agree with both points (fingers crossed it's craig though). His face looked constipated...it was almost the face of a grizzling child and his voice just did powerful - no subtlety. I was amazed, I thought he was going to wipe the floor with Lewis (who as far as I was concerned had been crap mostly), but he was awful.

...and yet this is a good point.

what I mean is that its not a clear indicator of their acting skills. If it had been Lee and Ben would have been a lot better.

Daniel sang, acted and emoted anything that had gone before into the next county.

I admire Ben for the way he's risen to the occasion in both his sing-offs but Daniel did the same and then some last night and was not rewarded in the same way for his effort.

Lewis might as well not have bothered. He was just as mediocre as he had been in the previous week's sing off and even worse than he's been in some of his solo performances but it was obvious ALW was going to put him through again.

It's a very sad and emotional song. How did you expect him to perform it? Laughing?

Oh, please.

I think you will find that that is called "acting". Some of the other contestants would do well to look up that word in the dictionary. Too many of them are performing as pop stars rather than stage artists.

Daniel didn't just wipe the floor with Lewis, he swept the garden and cleaned the lav with him.

It has uncomfortable lyrical content and connotations so if he was making you feel uncomfortable, he was doing his job.

As for Lewis being natural, his mouth movements remind me of the tortoise from the Creature Comforts energy ads.

Good point.

Experienced and renowned stage actors are often accused of overacting when they appear on TV or films.

You know you've hit the nail on the head to what's been bugging me about him and I've not figured it out. I have been saying that I think he's too "stage school", but not really been able to quantify it anymore. That's exactly what it is. It's the over shaping of the mouth. I went to drama lessons as a kid and we had to say our vowels with a cork in our mouth. He's doing something similar, only without the cork!

my OH thinks Lewis looks like he's had botox because he stares into the camera and seems to have little facial expression

That is exactly right, just what we are taught at "stage school" but that is as a youngster, not as this stage, why none of the so called judges have called this I will never know, but then again Nice Mr Kenwright - Everyone could be Joseph!!!!

Maybe she told daniel to try and look even older than he already did, ben to seem even more arrogant, and keith to have even worse diction?

We all may have favourites, but their is a huge difference in being constructive or just plain fanatical!

I liked ben and seamus's sing off becuase seamus showed ben up to be totally lacking in comparision.

I must never notice anything other than Daniel, (naturally ), cos i've never noticed Lee's lisp or neck vein thingy till it was pointed out! Craigs lipsmacking is now in my face too!

Daniel sung with great emotion and every time i watch it, i'm brought to tears

Which bit - he did in the sing off, but not Evergreen. For me Evergreen was the worst performance of the night.

But, agreed, he was magnificent in the sing off and the end bit.

This is coming from a huge Will Young fan - but Evergreen is a pants song - Will doesn't like singing it ... originally it was Westlife's song says it all really.

When you see how well he sung Bring Him Home it makes you wonder why none of them were given these types of song to sing ... It does show the great from the good.

By the way, I thought Lewis did a good job as well, but he was out-sung IMO.
