recording with freesat

not sure if I'm asking in the right place, but here goes, I've just changed from cable to freesat and I have a Bush VCR/DVD combi
recorder, with One Touch Rec. it's OK but if I want to set the timer, this is what I have to do....
The recorder has 1-6 ch. and AV1 AV2 and one other, while it is switched on it must be on AV2 to get a picture on the TV.

The tv must be on the channel you will be recording from, when you set the timer. then for video+ enter the number then press the button to put it in, the prog. list will show all the details, but for the ch. you must change it to AV2, seems crazy to me,

What have I done, or not done, as the case may be?
I don't know much.

Nothing wrong - the 'channel' you are recording is an external one (the Sat box attached to AV2 of your recorder) hence you having to ensure the channel is set to AV2. There is no way of setting this up correctly for video+ to log the channel on its own. Even tuning the Sky channel through RF to (say) channel 6 wont help as video+ doesnt cover sat channels.

There are recorders which allow you to set up which AV source is used for Video+ numbers for channels other than the usual terrestrial analogue five.

...but, of course, you still have to leave your digibox tuned to the appropriate digital channel for the duration of the recording.

Time to invest in a Freeview DVDR or a twin-tuner PVR like a Topfield?

Not if the digibox lets you set up timer events. Are there still any on the market that don't?

It depends on how old the OP's box is - he could also use EXT LNK to get the digibox to activate the VCR (if supported).

However, all these solutions still compromise the standard watch one channel / record another channel on his digital platform.
