Hi. I'm hoping for a bit of helpful advice.

I have just purchased a PS3, which I am over-the-moon happy with on the gaming front.

However when playing Blu Ray movies I notice an obvious picture 'stutter' or 'jitter' which is especially noticable on long panning shots which should be smooth.

I have a 42" Panasonic Viera which is a 1080i screen and have the PS3 connected via HDMI. The picture is otherwise outstandingly clear. I have tried both X Men 3 and Mission Impossible 3 and both suffer the same problem.

Has anyone else had this problem, or even better know of a solution?

The reason for the stuttering effect is 3:2 pulldown.

Feature films on Blu-ray and HD-DVD are encoded at their native frame rate of 24fps in all territories. Few TVs support a refresh rate that is a multiple of 24fps so the players upconvert to 60Hz using the 3:2 pulldown algorithm.

In a 3:2 film cadence the 1st film frame is shown 3 times, the 2nd is shown twice, the 3rd is shown 3 times, the 4th twice, leading to an uneven frame cadence of 3-2-3-2-3-2, and this leads to a noticeable stuttering effect on horizontal pans.

You won't notice this problem on PAL DVD movies or broadcast TV because they are encoded at 25fps to suit our 50Hz broadcast format. The motion is smooth but the movie runs 4% and the sound is 4% higher in pitch, which isn't ideal. Most people support the decision to encode HD movies at 24fps because while 3:2 pulldown can be avoided, the 4% speed-up can't be.

TVs that support the 1080p24 frame rate and can display it without judder and are beginning to appear in some high-end TVs, so it's only a matter of time before this feature becomes common. At the moment very few HD players actually output 1080p24. Most players (including the PS3) upconvert to 60Hz.

Thanks Meltcity. At least now I know I haven't set up anything incorrectly or have a problem I shouldn't have. To be honest I'm kind of getting used to it. Thanks for your help though.

Damn, that's another reason for me to delay getting a plasma.

The stuttering effect is exactly the same as you get with region 1 DVD movies and downloads of US filmed TV shows, so if you are already used to that it shouldn't bother you too much.

It just so happens that a new PS3 update has been released today. In addition to a plethora of upscaling options for movies and games, it also now outputs 1080p24. Not sure if that helps?

It also now supports media streaming - Another biggie...

I've got my new Sammy M87 coming tomorrow - Can't wait to give some of these new things a bash!!

The new update is good news for judder haters... provided you have a TV that accepts 1080p @24Hz.

None of Sony's current range of Bravia LCD TVs accept 1080p @24Hz. The forthcoming D3000 series will have a '24p Pure Cinema' Mode though.
