No, it simply plays in SD, and upscales it to HD resolution (but it's still only an SD picture), your LCD/Plasma already does the exact same thing from a normal DVD player. Basically HDMI upscaling DVD players are just an advertising gimmick, but lots of people are conned into thinking it gives them HD off their old SD DVD's.

All it does is perform some maths on the data stream coming off the disk to "invent" the pixels that are effectively missing between the two resolutions.

How good the result is depends on how clever the maths is that invents these missing pixels. Bear in mind that a HD picture could have 4 times as many pixels as a SD picture and you see how easy it could be to make a complete mess of the job!

But regardless of how good it is the result is only an approximation to HD. It is not true HD in the sense that it would be in any way the same as playing a true HD version of the disk on a real HD player.

And don't forget that not even a true HD player will play SD disks in true HD either. All it will do is the same mathematical trickery as this machine. Though chances are it may do a better job (or maybe not - price is no guarantee of competance after all!)
