Personally, I think he's putting on the big man act on Saturday night. He's only a kid and he's trying to pull it off on national television, he doesn't always get the tone right and sometimes appears a bit cocky. Inside I'd say he's bricking it.
I think a far more fruitful line of inquiry is to examine his relationship with Zoe. She doesn't pack any punches and if Ben couldn't take criticism then their relationship would be rocky. If Zoe thought Ben was arrogant then she'd be coming down on him like a ton of bricks every week. Remember what she was like with Emilie in Maria? But in fact, Zoe seems to get on very well with Ben, she likes him, she knows what his limitations are, but the two of them seem to work pretty well together.
