Something odd !

Hi guys,

We've got a Panasonic Viera 42" plasma TV (not HD) which has built-in Freeview but we always watch telly through the Sky channels. Just recently I've noticed something odd and the only way I can describe it is like 'ghost' text scrolling horizontally across the screen. I looked closely and could read some of the text. I then pressed the AV button to swap to the Freeview transmission and the station showing was Mojo(?) advertising future programmes. Now, curiously the text that I had seen scrolling when viewing through Sky was the same text as was displayed on the Freeview channel, the only difference being that it was a static image (not scrolling). I changed the Freeview channel to BBC1, swapped back to Sky and it was OK.

Then I noticed it again last night although I couldn't make out the text this time. I did the same thing, swapped to Freeview but the channel showing was still BBC with no text visible.

We've had the telly approx. 2 years and I'm sure it never used to do this.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what might be the problem?

It could be 'signal leakage' through the scart cable from the TV. Upgrading to a decent fully shielded scart cable would cure this, if it is the cause.

I used to get this when I watched Sky on my TV via scart. It's because your TV is pushing the Freeview signal from its internal digital tuner down the scart lead that you are using to connect your Sky box to your TV, as if it was sending the signal to a DVDR or VCR. So, you are seeing a combination of both when watching that AV input. Now that my sky box is connected to my TV via HDMI, which is purely an input rather than an input/output, I don't get it anymore.

To get round it, I used to tune the internal Freeview channel to one that wasn't showing a picture or text (i.e. a radio station or one of the TUTV channels that weren't broadcasting at the time). Alternatively, see whether you can stop the Freeview signal from beng sent to the scart socket within your TV setup.

If av output in the setup menu is set to DVB on the AV socket that sky is plugged into change it to output a different av instead, preferably one that is not used. That should help the problem.

you just need oxygen free scarts, this is a standardish scart which will be screened
