1080p at 37", or 720p at 32"?
Hello.
I'll be buying a new TV soon (yay) and I'm getting drawn towards the Samsung LCD range. I've seen the very lovely looking M87 range, which does a full 1080p 37" screen. Now it's quite possible this might be a big too big for my new lounge (need to get some big bits of card and cut them to size to see how it looks...) so if that's the case, I'll be swapping my current 28" CRT to a 32" LCD. Trouble is, as I'm sure you're all aware, is that 32" screens aren't currently offering 1080p (unless I'm mistaken? Please say I am...) so it'll need to be the "lesser" HD resolution. My question is how much difference would there be between a 32" running 720p, and a 37" running 1080p from a few feet away? Would the picture look the same quality, just a bit smaller? I'll be buying a PS3 so want to get the most out of it...

Your eyes would not be able to tell the difference from a few feet

I can't comment on the 1080p picture, because broadcasts are all 1080i - but putting full HD 1080 sets side by side with 768 resolution sets, only results in a VERY slight improvement. You can just tell the 1080 set is better, but if they weren't side by side you wouldn't know which was which.
If you want a 32 inch (and it's the size I'd go for), then existing 768 resolution ones are perfectly fine!. |

1080p is a waste of time in my opinion.
The difference is only noticable when really close to the set, and even then it's only very slight. |

I really hate Samsung with a passion, but yes, it'd be alright.

I think they look cheap, are built cheap, have the worst sound of any LCD and breakdown all too commonly.
Oh, and certain HD sources 'judder' on the R8* series .No thanks. |

i've read on av forum, hdtv test and trusted reviews about the new toshiba x series. they all heap praise on it. i'm waiting for the z series, but if you are looking for a beautiful looking, sd freeview friendly, 1080p lcd tv you should also consider the toshiba 37X3030DB.
it's about £800.. http://audiovisual.kelkoo.co.uk/ctl/...previous=group (prices seem to drop slightly every other day) this is a user's review from avforum of its big brother 42X3030DB. there will be different specs on each one he has a ps3 and describes in layman's terms the pros and cons (mostly pros) of the tv. http://www.avforums.com/forums/showp...50&postcount=5 |

The 37 and the 42 have quite different contrast ratios.

1080p is just a marketing ploy to the normal user you will never tell the difference between 1080p and 1080i.
You ask any worker in currys and they give you all this jargon and have no idea what they are talking about. I have both of these tv,s and play hd films on them both and YOU CANNOT TELL THE DIFFERENCE IN PICTURE also they don,t broadcast in 1080p it,s just a waste of xtra money in my opinion. My only suggestion is to make sure you get more than one hdmi socket. |

1080i vs 1080p is a bit of a red herring because virtually all digital displays use progressive scanning and have to deinterlace 1080i to 1080p, which is why there is very little difference between the 1080i and 1080p output from a Blu-ray or HD-DVD player. Regardless of whether the source is 1080i or 1080p you still need a 1080p display to resolve all the pixels in a 1080 line source.
Of course, once you get to 1080p resolution other factors start to become crucial, such as the quality of the deinterlacing chip in the TV, the ANSI contrast ratio (not to be confused with the meaningless full on/off contrast measurement used by all current TV manufacturers), motion tracking and colour reproduction. LCD is still lacking in these areas, while plasmas lack the resolution to deliver Full HD pictures. |
