Noticed on my DAB radio this evening that the following stations have been relabelled:

BBC 6 Music is now 'BBC Radio 6Music'
BBC7 is now 'BBC Radio 7'
1Xtra - BBC is now 'BBC Radio 1Xtra'

I wonder why?

BBCWorld Service and BBCAsian Network are now BBC WorldService and BBC AsianNetwork respectively.

Interestingly BBC Radio 5Live seems to have a secondary service of the same name at the moment.

BBC R5LiveSportX seems to be pointing at BBC Radio 1 at the current point in time too.

The 8 character names have also changed.

Radio 1 is now BBC R1
1xtra is now BBC R1X
BBC5Live is now BBC R5L
BBCWorld is now BBC WS
BBCAsian is now BBC AN
6 Music is now BBC R6M

Seems a bit silly -- BBCAsian is clear enough, but what's BBC AN to the casual observer?

Names have changed on the Internet streams on my new Wifi radio, but they haven't changed on Freeview yet.

Maybe it's to keep the BBC stations in order, ie 1234567.

Much better that way, it means you can scroll through all the BBC stations easily.

it does make more sense really, as before Radio 1 used to be situated in the middle of nowhere, well next to the commercial dross on me DAB set. Also strangely enough makes me want to listen to 1xtra more just because it has the BBC in front of it.

FM still remains the same for Radio 1, unsurprising since its freq, rather than name that you use to reach the station of your choice

Except they don't - my radio goes BBC R5L, BBC R6M, BBC R1, BBC R2, BBC R3, BBC R4....

Any yay, my car radio will now flick between "BBC R1" and "RADIO 1" every time I turn a corner Any why the addition of "Radio" on 6 Music, Radio 1, BBC 7 which never (or nearly never) use the word on air?

Oh FFS.
It's diamond content like this that keeps me coming back to digitalspy over and over and over.
That's the most legendary thing I've ever read on here.

It seems a pointless exercise as even if you don't preset stations, 10 on the multiplex is not that problematic. As my eyesight is mediocre anyway I find that besides making less sense "BBC Radio 6 Music" clutters up my car radio display. BBC 6 Music is perfectly clear. I would rather they concentrate on keeping the scrolling display up to date as when you park up when something interesting is playing, but you can't wait for the DJ to tell you what it is, the song title and artist is often not on display. Often all you have is the text and E mail contact details - the same on Radio Three where you might have another 30 minutes to wait for a title.

I think Chris England has taken over as programme controller of BBC AN, i.e. Anorak Nation.
