Political Songs
What are the best political songs of all time - not just by lyrics, but by melody too?
My favourites are :- Belfast Child - Simple Minds (1989) Rough Justice - Banarama (1984) Mad World - Tears For Fears (1982) My mind's gone blank, remind me of others? |

Most of the Clash's, Roger Waters' (mostly his solo stuff and on The Final Cut under Floyd) Rush and Manic Street Preachers songs are political.

State of the Union by David Ford is brilliant. He once introduced it with the following:
Let's get deadly serious here. This is a song about the government. It's a song about us and them. This is a song about standing up for what you believe in. Or alternatively it's a white boy with a guitar having a whinge. It's the oldest art form other than prostitution. And probably a lot less constructive. It amused me anyway ![]() jack |

A load of Skunk Anansie's songs are political. In particular, "Yes It's F**king Political"
Quite to the point, I guess ![]() I think Little Baby Swastikkka is my favourite political song about them (it's anti-racism, before anyone comments )

However Bush is probably too thick to understand it. Nice to see Dear Mr Presdident get a mention on the forum.......their debut album was a corker.......'Hey Daddy Have You Ever Been Arrested', 'Fate', etc......... great lyrics.........Another excellent, often politically tinged lyricist was Bob Walkenhorst (sp.?) of The Rainmakers.........'the generation that could change the world is still looking for its car keys'........

70's singer "melanie" with the song "Lay Down/Candles in the Rain". During the Vietnam war.
This is the long version so it doesn't really get started until 1:45. One of my faves from the early 70's. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6HLf4CRyFjM |
