Copy Protection? Might be that the programme you are trying to record onto DVD has copy protection enabled. In which case the DVD recorder will simply refuse to record it.

Getting round copy protection is legally dubious so probably not something to discuss on a forum like DS.

starts to record but never finishes recording sometimes 5 mins,20 or gets to nearly end of film then stops. I thought we were allowed to copy to dvd for personal use am not doing anything illegal as post above implies we used to tape onto vhs so what do you mean?

Technically what you are doing IS illegal. Though you stand very little chance of being prosecuted for it. Unless you plan on making several hundred copies and flog them at Car Boot sales.

You can legally record a broadcast television programme for the purposes of time shifting only, ie to watch it at a later time. You cannot keep any such recording as part of a collection for repeated viewing.

I was suggesting copy protection may have been a reason for why the recordings fail. Though that does not appear to be the case here otherwise you would see the recording fail fairly soon into the recording and fairly consistently, or so you would expect anyway.

Though with things like Macrovision a VHS recorder would actually record but due to the way Macrovision works you would not have anything remotely viewable at the end. Never tried with a DVD recorder so can't comment on how that would react.

What happens when you try recording directly from the DVD recorder's own tuner? Does it randomly fail then or can you record all the way to the end of the disk?

Have you tried different brands of disks? It may be that you have a dodgy brand or batch of disks. Re-using disks that have previously contained recordings (RW or RAM media obviously) might be an issue too.
