Poor blu ray picture
A couple of years back I made the mistake of buying the Philips 37pf5520D LCD tv, its a pretty poor set and I am gutted that I didnt research it more however I cannot really afford to replace it now so I will have to get on with it. My problem is that I now have a PS3 connected but when I put a Blu Ray disk in I am really not blown away by the picture, I have seen a Blu Ray film playing on a Sony Bravia set and it was totally mind blowing, Does anyone know if I am doing something wrong or is it just a rubbish TV? The PS3 is connected via the sony component cable which has to plug into an adaptor so it will connect to the TV's only HD socket which is DVI. Blu Ray is one of the reasons I splashed out on a PS3 and I am so dissapionted. Any help would be appreciated.

as the screen only does 720 i wouldnt worry about it
you need 1080P to make use of blu ray |

Disappointing picture quality may be due to several factors, such as having noise reduction enabled on the TV which will soften the picture, or incorrect brightness, contrast and colour settings.
As the TV is an older model the 1080i60 film mode detection may not be very good (or may not be there at all), another important factor in determining final picture quality. That said, even the latest TVs are unable to detect 50Hz film sources, not just at 1080i50 resolution but even at SD level. Try setting the output on the Blu-ray player to 720p and see if it improve things as the player will then be doing the deinterlacing. You may want to invest in an HDMI cable and an HDMI-DVI adapter as this will preserve the digital signal pathway (the DVI socket is HDCP compliant so it should work fine). Shouldn't cost much more than a tenner. Bear in mind that not all Blu-ray transfers are equal, so just because one looks spectacular it doesn't mean they all will. Which Blu-ray player do you have? |

Thanks everyone, I might just laugh off blu ray films until I can get a 1080p screen.

I've got my PS3 setup on a KDL-40w2000 via HDMI and it looks amazing!! especially casino royal
also got my X360 set up on the same tv via component with the HD-dvd drive and the blue ray wins outright as far as im concerned but still pretty good |

Does your TV do 720p, if so download firmware1.80 for your PS3 as this update now has a 720p output option for blu ray. Also theres a DVD upscaling option now as well |
