I have just had a 40in Samsung 1080P set delivered and I want to get the best out of it until a) Sky HD comes down in price, and b) HDDVD/BluRay combination players come down in price.

I am therefore looking for a reasonably priced DVD player that will output via HDMI and will do its best to upscale to 1080P. Does anyone have any ideas/thoughts/recommendations?

I currently have Sky and my LG DVD recorder connected through scart 1 and 2. The DVD recorder also has a component output which I am going to "play with" to see what the image is like, but I am guessing that an upscaling DVD player may give me the best "HD" image in the short run...

Even though I will not watch DVDs all that often, I still need something that will give my missus the "Oooooh, now I see why we bought a big TV instead of a new sofa" factor.

I bought a Phillips DVP5980 dvd player yesterday from Costco, for £49.99 and it says it upscales to 1080p.

I havent tried it yet though, I will do tonight.

Your TV already upscales your current DVD player, I think you're probably going to be disappointed with an upscaling DVD player which doesn't really do anything different. It's just a question which has the better upscaler.

If you want to impress your missus, get either a proper HD DVD player (of either type) or Sky HD.

Do you think I will notice any picture difference using the LG's progressive output over component rather than via the Scart I am currently using?

You can try it and see, but I would have thought any difference would be fairly marginal - RGB SCART is capable of far higher quality than a DVD player provides, so it's not a limiting factor. You've probably got some spare phono leads knocking around?, use those to try it.
