Stock Aitken & Waterman were the worst thing that happened to the 80s. I'll never forgive them for polluting the charts with their crap.

Compared to todays pop with all the spin and hype(artists made out to be credible(given writing credits, playing their own instruments (the tambourine)) when they are just puppets in reality, the 80's seem tame now. Yes the PWL hit factory at the time was seen as a Hell on Earth and Pete Waterman was the Devil himself, yet there was hardly "covering up" of the fact there "artists" merely sang on the record and as Kylie claimed in the begining thats all she could have been, having no previous knowledge of the music biz at the time "just learning". Tamala Motown ( Supremes,Jackson, Marvin Gaye etc was basically just the same set up but doesn't recieve the bile SAW do in the UK) Their records became so popular, ubiquitous, and imitated (re "cheesey" sound) during the 80's NOT because of some Tony Bleeauurgh like spin (such things were unheard of back then and the gaffs made by SAW in public hardly credited slick PR)but because the demand from the single markets/kids became so huge, indeed the relatively small independant PWL could hardly keep up with the demand no wonder they could get away with lowering quality control at that time.So blame the record buyers of the day for polluting their own chart, which is entirely their collective perogative not some individuals opinion. "You spin me around" from Dead or Alive was the first huge hit they produced. Did anyone at the time call the production cheesey ...OF COURSE not - it was fresh, exciting + new then, every other old + new Pop singer of the time wanted their records to sound like that, notably Bananarama with their Venus remake, by that time SAW had evolved their sound but thats not what the record buying public wanted, they wanted more of the Dead or Alive sounding Track and PWL was a business after all, not some critic appeasing think tank. However unless you are musically deaf they did manage to advance their sound, with by far their most successful singer - Kylie. Does the production on "I should be so Lucky" really sound no different to "Better the Devil...."??How about the other Kylie classics from the same album as "Devil", "What do i have to Do" and especially the original "Shocked" - the amount of inspiration, uniqueness and effort put into these productions is very clear imo and the personal reactions i got from first listens are some of the biggest i've ever had from music. Unsurprisngly this happened when the disenchantment from the public and backlash against them was reaching its peak and their popularity was spiraling down, ie they had more time and incentive to try to prove their detractors wrong.. I've not heard any new SAW stuff but any of the music they've made without all 3 of them together in the past hasn't consistently compared but whatever standard of trk they come up with i think their's was the sound of the moment and ironically the success they had then will it prevent it now.... |

Whats wrong with a good unpretentious three minute pop single? Worked in the 50's, 60's and 70's so why not the 80's ...Pete Waterman is my kinda guy and I'm a 63-year-old grandfather addicted to trance who has enjoyed the three minute single since 1958

They also didn't just make cheesy pop, songs like Roadblock that of course everyone thought was a rare 70s new york funk record, then they came out and revealed it was S/A/W just to show they actually could make cool records if they wanted to.
I always loved their acid house stuff, like packjammed and this one: http://youtube.com/watch?v=9ZI4-bAd9Sc Check Pete Waterman and Sinitta in the vid. |

Open your ears, your mind and try it - you might just like or you could just roll over put your feet in the air and confine yourself to the box that those of us who have been around a few years refuse to be pigeonholed in! |

nope, i'm an electronic music enthusiast - i just can't take to modern day trance. used to love the older stuff (and even the progessive house side of things) but moved on from that years ago. there just isn't anything in it that could hold my interest.
it was just a dig at the music - not at you or you age. hope you keep 'raving' till your 101 years old

A horrible facet of 80s music that made the UK charts deteriorate for a long time. |

I'd heard about them getting together and remaking music around this time last year.
Interesting to see how this'll pan out! |
