Just got a DVD Recorder and I'm beginning the slow and painful process of transferring my VHS over to DVD.

As you can imagine I have no intention of any copyright infringements, however, theoretically can you suggest any ways around the macrovision issue to enable a high quality transfer.

Secondly, if in a world with no copyright laws you were to perform a VHS to DVD transfer - what do you expect with regard to quality for tapes that are aged as much as 20 years old.

Can't answer the first one, but with the second question you are probably best off with a dvd recorder which has a timebase corrector built in to help with the stability of the transfer. Panasonics have these built in. Not all makes have though. And use a good VHS machine for playback - possibly an s-vhs machine would get the most out of an ordinary tape (discuss!) - and use an s-video lead from it to the dvd recorder.

This is the one you want:

The guy used to sell them on e-bay also.

Tested by my mate who transferred loads of copy protected VHS to his DVD recorder.

I've also tried DVD > DVD where the recorder was a Panasonic - no problems.

Don't forget that discussions on ways to counter copyright protection aren't allowed on Digital Spy........

Get a decent VHS to playback the tapes, 20 year old tapes may play perfectly, it just depends on how worn out they are and how worn out the video player is.....
