I think the salient point is "a year ago".

The media-driven hysteria has calmed somewhat in the months that have followed. Calling her a 'pig' seems very odd now given the huge change in context.

Well, if I started a thread with that title I think I would have either been drunk, incredibly shortsighted as to the rapid downhill direction it would probably go in or intent on causing a bit of agro just for the sake of it or all three. I would also fully expect to get my fingers burnt along the way.
