What on Earth was Simon getting at with his comment about Media Studies in Lincoln?? Was he trying to imply our University isn't very good?

*is shocked*

I thought he said "linking". Meaning that people did Media Studies degrees in the various media techniques, how to link between subjects included.

That seems to have just been me though.

I think he was trying to imply that not only was your university not very good but that the people who did Media Studies there were the lowest of the low.

no, he definitely said 'Lincoln'. Because he said 'in Lincoln, or whereever'.

So he was talking about a place...

Honestly! How rude of him!

Those two need to step out of their ivory towers and live in the real world a bit.

He was expressing the opinion that he thought Media Studies wasn't necessary to work in TV, and gave Lincoln [University] as an example of where people go to do Media Studies. Maybe it was the first non-Oxbridge University that came into his head. I didn't think he was deliberately being rude about Lincoln (he's not Katie); perhaps having a dig at people who study Media Studies! Hopefully after that shoddy producing he's got different views now!

I thought he was saying that people go to Lincoln to learn to be on the telly. Who knew that Lincoln was the mecca for media wannabees?

My daughter is going to Salford University to study Media and Performance Studies in October so who knows, I may have a potential TV salesperson in the family (do you think staff get discounts on decoupage and hair removal items?)

I doubt Simon will have even heard of Salford to make disparaging comments about.

s'funny, I thought he was actually suggesting the opposite!!! - I really thought he was defending his poor producing/presenting by saying 'well I thought I didn't do too bad, after all people usually take 3 years to do this at Lincoln or whereever'

I didn't take it to be disparaging at all about Lincoln University *at all*- I suspect he just knows of someone who there - Lincoln University does have a lot of media and TV production courses which are very well respected in the industry

He might have even seen the advert for the BA Media Production course it's been doing the rounds on the tubes etc

ps
I don't particualrly like Simon think he's a bit of a twerp!

but just defending what he says as I think it's been taken the opposite way to how he mean it

Now *Katie's* comments on the other hand ... they *were* meant to be condescending!

if I recall, in the days before polys were called universities Salford was an established university with a good name and a history. Lincoln wasn't a university. Simon will either know that or not.

In the PC world, all universities are equal. In the real world universities and courses are regarded differently and although some ex-poly courses might be among the best for their subjects most are not. That's reflected in entry requirements and how the academic and business world view their graduates. For example according to The Daily Mail , Katie went to whats regarded as a good university thats hard to get into, in a department thats highly rated for its subject and evidently did well there - which would suggest to most people she's quite bright. The first question is if Lincoln has a decent reputation or not. The next question is where did Simon go - because he often doesn't.

Salford is and always has been a very good university and their Media department is world renowned with places being highly sought after - alumni include Christopher Ecclestone, Peter Kay and Charity Dingle off Coronation Street. L.S. Lowry also went there but I don't think he did a Media degree.

Just so you know.

There is a very simple explanation for the 'Lincoln' comment. One of the main researchers for the Apprentice, who stayed with them in the house and looked after them behind the scenes the whole time they were there, did a Media degree at Lincoln University. Simon would have known this person well.

Simon was clearly alluding to this person in his comment, which I would suggest should be seen as a playful dig, not derogatory condescension. He was having a bit of fun.

(He still should have gone on the basis of that task, though...)

*is shocked*

I just thought he knew that they offered a specific course. I don't think he was saying anything bad about the course. I thought that perhaps he knew somebody who had done such a course there.
