Apologies - should have explained my choosing Lee over the others.
I agree that they are all dedicated and determined - but Lewis, Ben and Keith are very young and have not yet had the opportunity to experience the total hard, and at times totally demoralising slog that the theatre demands.
The fact that Lee has played understudy speaks volumes about his dedication to the job. I'm not totally sure how the production he was in allocated their understudy roles, and whether he took on another role in the meantime, but in many productions, the understudy is just sitting alone in the dressing room for three hours a night, waiting for that elusive call. It takes an enormous strength of spirit to be able to turn up every night in the hope that you might get your chance to prove yourself, only to be unseen backstage.
I may be totally wrong - but if the other three were given understudy roles, I think Lewis would feel totally demoralised, Ben would probably go and find something better to do, and Keith would probably not be able to cope with the fact that he wasn't the chosen one. As I say, I may be totally misreading the boys - and apologies for that - but to my mind - Lee has proved he has dedication and determination - the others, as yet, have a long way to go to catch up with him.
