The Cardinal Sin for Sugar
Clytemnestra
31-05-2007
I think that Katie has committed one of the cardinal sins as far as SAS is concerned - contempt for her customer. In the last two shows, she has shown nothing but contempt for the people she is trying to sell too. These are people with backgrounds like SAS himself.

Hopefully he's seen this and will deal with her.

Whenever you put yourself on higher ground than your customer you run big risks and I can imagine her talking down to quite a lot of people. Certainly if any part was done on votes alone she'd be out, but then I doubt she'd have said half the comments she has said.

To be fair, I didn't think her talking about 'Mavis' was especially disparaging. I imagine that the vast majority of home shopping channel viewers do fit the demographic of lonely old biddy in all honesty.

The cardinal sin was committed a few weeks back, I thought the angry little care bear was going to expire:

"You lost me money! You lost me money! You lost me money!"

I was thinking about that, but also her comments about how she wouldn't have certain products in her house because she has taste etc.

I think that she probably does have pretty good taste. However, her attitude is very vulgar.

Taste is an individual thing. One person's this is another person's that and so on. All she's doing is expressing her own distaste for certain things - possibly in a vulgar way (as has been suggested) but certainly in an entertaining and unforgettable way.

Having said that, I do find it hard to be so broadminded about those people who bought the wolf jackets in series 1!!

well she doesn't have good taste in make up, clothes or jewellery - gaudy, unflattering and brash. Her comments are all in bad taste - there are subtler and wittier ways of putting people down that don't completely alienate people

and judging by her little thing with Paul, her taste in men is absolutely atrocious!

How she has the front to disparage anyone I really don't know

As I say these are all your tastes.

It's interesting how she gives her 'customers' names. From now on if I call someone a 'Katie' it certainly won't be a compliment.

I like Katie, she's easily the most capable there, but yeah, needs to watch what she's saying....

I don't think SAS is any different. He got rid of Sophie for not wanting to sell rubbish at high prices to gullible people. I suspect most marketing people have a similar view to katie and that the people running phone-in shows can't believe there are so many dim people out them prepared to make them rich - and Mavis is in the same target group.

You may have all sorts of thoughts in your head about the target market you are aiming at but to say them out loud in such a supercilious and disparaging way shows she cares nothing about selling and everything about wanting to be a media player.

Actually I take back what I said. I don't want her name entering the dictionary and for her to attain immortality through it.

She could have got lumbered with that pillock Rory....
If he had told me to take my jacket and tie off to work the way he told the other lads.....
He'd have got a doughboy

Quite common for marketing people to do this. Not only will they pick a name, but they will pick out a face (cut out from one of many many magazines they have lieing around). They will then associated anything they can with this face, again by cutting stuff out of magazines. So they could end up with a picture of a "Kevin", surrounded by cut outs of an ipod, a "tardis", a bottled beer etc etc etc. Apparently it helps the marketing boys focus on the target market, better than "geek in his 20-30s"

What Katie was doing was the exact same technique (apart from the cut out )

True, but he can do that now that he makes all his money from property deals and is no longer actually selling products to people. He is speaking as a quirky and slightly eccentric media celebrity who is expected to speak his mind. He would never have done that forty years ago when he was selling electrical goods out of a barrow. Katie has made the mistake of thinking she can start her career from that level.

The one person who spectacularly showed contempt for his customer and paid a heavy price was Ratner. Katie should learn a lesson from that.
