I love their 3 albums In a Glass House, The Power and the Glory and Free Hand. I didn't like some of the earlier or later albums that I've heard bits and pieces of - although the track Interview sounds interesting. Others I like - Yes (Yes Album to Relayer) - went to see the Steve Howe Trio a couple of weeks ago, and it was fantastic. They did a jazz version of Mood For a Day, and also played The Solid Time of Change (Close To The Edge), and Siberian Khatru for an encore. Todd Rundgren - everything up to Initiation (especially that wild Treatise on Cosmic Fire!), and then after that just bits and pieces. ELP - but only selected bits - I have mixed feelings about them - they've done some great stuff and some crap. Jethro Tull - mainly up to and including Thick as a Brick. Genesis - Foxtrot to Lamb Lies Down. Gong - (prog rock? - I suppose so) - Camembert Electrique & the Radio Gnome trilogy. (Loved the house remix of You as well) King Crimson Van der Graaf Generator - Pawn Hearts & H to He (don't know any of their other stuff) |

You think Tull are prog? More like Folk-Rock IMO.

Nowadays, Dungen have a pretty good take on prog. And I reckon the Flaming Lips are prog in their own addled way. |

Yes are great. It's a shame most people don't get the lyrics and think Jon Anderson makes up lyrics that 'just sound good'. Totally misses the point of Yes all together.
Rush are also great but are becoming more unprogressive with each successive album. Hemispheres was the best, a complete blast

Does Mike Oldfield count or is it just prog-lite?

You're all sodding stuck in the 70s!
There's plenty of great prog bands that've appeared in the last 15 or so years. Granted, the better ones tend to have a heavier edge than anything from the 70s that puts them more into the prog metal bracket (e.g. Pain Of Salvation), but the likes of Frost*, Spock's Beard, Porcupine Tree deserve a mention. |
