Is it just me or does this show come up several notches when musical songs are included. I loved the two duets tonight and I really thought the songs showed the guys off better. I dont really understand why they have all the other stuff for weeks on end. No disrespect to the other genres but when it is a programme to cast a lead in a west end production........ Do they underestimate how many fans of MT are out there watching?

Just a thought.

Absolutely - the whole show lights up. The boys also usually perform better, since musical theatre, and not pop, is what most of them are interested in. It's a huge shame that several of them never even got the chance to show what they could do (other than the finale).

I love it too - Lewis particularly shone tonight - especially in the sing off

Spot on...... I think the Beeb seriously underestimate the viewing public of shows like this. I agree that the MT fans are probably in the minority by this stage..... they start off expecting a feast of classic songs but quickly get fed up with the "pop" aspect trundled out week after week (I know I did).

However, people like ALW and BK should be aware that they are missing out on a huge opportunity to sell MT to the younger generation. By having teeny-bopper-types introduce them to songs by Cole Porter, R&H, etc. they will be nurturing future "bums on seats"

I think this is why I actually prefer Channel 4's Musicality to either Maria or Joseph. It was so much more about musicals, and also (despite all ALW's guff about 'nurturing') there was much more emphasis on bringing out stage talent than all the competitive stu.ff

Agree with you there. Lewis has been pretty dismal up til tonight (but that includes the sing-off with Daniel - maybe he expected to go). But he did well with Evita.

I too love it when they sing songs from the musicals. The pop stuff bores me.

Loved Lewis & Lee doing Oh what a circus tonight, it's the first performance of Lewis's that I've rated.

From Daniel's DS interview:

Quote:
“Did you find it odd that you were asked to sing pop songs to win a part in a West End musical?
"I did. It is quite frustrating, that. I kind of understand why they're doing it, because obviously the public have to be interested in what we're singing, but I think they think the public are stupid. They think the public won't know musical theatre songs, which I think is wrong. The public obviously have an interest, otherwise seven million people wouldn't watch the show. I can kind of understand - Joseph is a pop musical - but I do think there should have been more musical songs in there. There have been one or two, but I think there should be more, definitely.”

Seems as though he agrees with you.
I love it when they do musical theater songs too - I especially loved Keith and Ben's duet, even though I've never seen Starlight Express. I really do wish they'd do more musical songs.

Could not agree more- MT numbers are just such a different ball game from the usual pop drivel the contestants get landed with. I guess it's another instance of 'dumbing down', and fear that MT isn't populist enough to appeal to a wide audience. Very, very short sighted and another lost opportunity to raise our rising generation's musical tastes from the bog standard common denominator. That said there have been some fantastic exceptions to the rule...look at the favourite performance thread for examples.

Again I agree Lewis blossomed with more sympathetic pieces tonight and as one panelist declared 'showed he was a true musical theatre performer'. His duet was inspiring, his solo a delight.

I never thought he was..... and Daniel was always my second fave...... it's just his postings are so OTT praiseworthy - even more so than some of the ones on the Lee thread

Couldn't agree more. I can pick out two highlights:

Bring him home (but, I'm biased; I am always moved by that song)

Oh what a circus: Lee and Lewis did the impossible for me - they obliterated a teenage crush on David Essex and the original version, and turned it into a new and amazing song.

That was almost what happened with me last year: Before Maria started I was all "I can't wait for this show. It'll be like Pop Idol but they'll all be singing musical theatre songs every week!" So I was rather disappointed when yet more pop was trundled out.

Anyway, it does become a whole different show when they do musical theatre numbers. I loved both the duets (and I hadn't been a big fan of Keith until I saw him in the Starlight Express number), and Craig's This Is The Moment was definitely a highlight of the series for me.

Seconded! . The only reason i'll be watching the final is for the chance to see Daniel again .

I'm an MT newbie and dont know half of the songs but even i can recognise a fantastic performance when i see it. I much prefer the MT songs to the pop drivel and really ALW should have concentrated on the MT side and not assumed that just because not everyone goes to the theatre every week, we can still appreaciate a good MT number

Of course, not all pop is drivel. Lee's performance of Leave Right Now was great.
