Too much incidental music in Dr Who?
In the last story (which I thought was very good and a lot beyons the normal mindless and childless dross that RTD churns out) the only neagtive was the often instrusive and inappropriate scoring of music that was going on continuously during scenes.
One 'theme' in particular (the Little Brown Jug music) which accompanied the little girl was pathetic and liek something from The Chickle Brothers or Peter Glaze from Crackerjack... Do you think there is too much incidentral music in new Dr Who? Do you think this heightnens the drama or ruin it? Do you think the amount of music is ok but just silly and intrusive? |

I think that sometimes the music overpowers the show. I feel as if I've been a a concert at times. It can be too loud. The composer has more airtime than the actors!

I agree. Sometimes I have to boost the centre speaker on my system as I cannot hear what is being said over the blasting my ears are getting from the music. Far too intrusive. Music should be there to complement drama, in Doctor Who it certainly does not do this, it overpowers it.

TBF, it isn't Murray Gold's fault. Its the guy who levels it in the final mix.

I think most of the time it's ok, although the music does sometime gets my attention more than what is going on in the show.

I LOVE Murray Gold's music, it makes the show seem "Bigger". Perhaps it could be mixed a little lower when there's dialogue though.

I quite like the music tbh, I love listening to them in the background, but yeah, maybe lower the volume down a bit on intimate scenes.

The music has got a lot better since the first series when often it did seem intrusive and overbearing. Since using an orchestra for scoring the music the whole thing sounds cinematic. The only thing is sometimes I find the choice of music unsuitable for certain scenes. This is not really a serious problem and used to happen in the old series as well as the new..

I have to agree about the incidental music. It sometimes obscures the actors' dialogue. I have noticed that I have to increase the volume to hear the speech, then I'm blasted out the chair by the music and sound effects. There is something wrong with the production team's idea of balanced audio. |

Watched a interview with RTD recently where he said he likes a lot of noise on the show, including loud music. So basically he gives the okay to the sound levels on the episodes.
But I do think the sound mix is a bit all over the place sometimes, especially the music level. |

Personally, I think the music is great. But there is some dissent, and never let it be said that I am an enemy of democracy: so if you hate it, try this - http://www.bbc.co.uk/consumer/tv_and...er_index.shtml

I tell you what I've noticed. When I watch Dr Who, I hate the music. What I also find is it drowns out a lot of dialogue. On SEVERAL occasions, I've found myself watching Confidential and going "ohhh, that's what they said" when I get to hear the dialogue without the crappy background music. So yes, I think it ruins it. |
