Sorry Cleo I disagree but IMHO Danny doesn't shine his vibrato is all over the place and he is over singing it. Its possibly my favourite aria from any opera (even pre the 3 tenors) and think its actually a bloody stupid choice for 18 year olds its impossible to sing well unless you've had years of training - Ben is in tune except for 1 bit and is actually not over straining.

I totally agree that it's a stupid choice for 18 year olds - part of Ben's problem is that his voice just isn't mature enough for it, which isn't his fault at all - to me he sounds like he's forcing his voice to try and match the others, whose voices have clearly matured earlier. But what concerns me more is the lack of variety in tone, dynamics, intensity and the very unmusical phrasing... plus he doesn't really sound as though he knows what the words are about... the notes are all there in pretty much the right place though, which is a good place to build from.

That's good news. I thought I was the only one who adored it!

Grand opera is probably not going to be Ben's thing - but unlike you I thought his emotional interpretation of Nessum Dorma was spot on, as it was in all of the songs he sung in Joseph. Agree about it being stupid to ask an 18 year old to sing this song - apart from anything else I've been told it could do serious damage to his vocal cords without the proper training. But anyway I liked it.
