Interesting story from today's Mirror. The boss of Satellite Direct UK, Satcover and Homecare Services Agreements has been found guilty of a massive tax fraud. Oh dear!

Nice see there's some justice. But I wonder how much of the £27Million he's managed to hide away until he gets out?

Reynolds was also linked to the Brighton IPTV (and other things) outfit, which variously traded under the names GDB TV, PlayTV and Something Broadcast... I wonder if some of his compatriots have been dragged into court yet?

Interesting blog for those who are intrigued by the cross-linking of some of the people and companies in which Reynolds has operated: http://boakes.org/spam-satellite-direct/

Another Mirror Story about these dodgy companies. This time it's Digital Satellite Warranty Cover Limited.

Have had a call today from one of these firms and they gave me a website to check out - www.b-covered.co.uk. It costs £9.50 a month or £99.50 for the year (discount) and the website looks very professional.
Wouldn't take him up on it anyway but anyone know if they are genuine?

I see the website has full contact details an 0845 number etc. No Details and I would be suspisious.

I was once told to look for the above on a website.

Who likes an 0845 number but at least you can call them.

But a Lancaster address and an 0845 number instead of an 01524 number. Why?

The website appears to me to be one of the 'template' type and that (with the phone number anomoly) makes me suspicious.

If I had Sky, I would simply save lets say £10 a month and pay a local Sat firm to fix the dish or buy a box from the auction site.

Most of the time these warranties are not worth the paper they a written on.

An act of God: The weather blowing the dish offline. I do not think this is covered for example.

There's no such thing as an 'act of god', as they can't prove the existence of any such mythical being. Any movement of the dish is certainly covered - and shouldn't occur anyway if it's fitted correctly.

The ONLY official insurance is via D&G, the rest are mainly crooks and con artists scamming money off you.

Got a phone call yesterday from Elite Sky.

I told the chap, after he had got my name wrong (good start!), that I wasn't interested in a warranty - to which he replied "we're not selling warranties. I see that you already have a policy" at which point I cut him off with "not I don't and don't phone me again"

Got another call today - don't know who from, my mother took the call and said I wasn't in. They said they would call back!

They'll get short shrift!

I've been contacted about this by Digital Repair Services Limited, as I was a customer of Digital Satellite Warranty Cover Ltd. Why has it taken so long for Sky customers to be told about this?

A recording of one of these calls. Find out if these scam companies will cover your Sky box against rice pudding, dog vomit or burglary.

That was hilarious!!! I wish I had the presence of mind to do something like that but I doubt I could keep it up as long as you! Brilliant! And thanks.

As an aside I had a call from 'Becovered' the other day and now I just say I am alredy covered with Sky and they hang up. Not as funny as yours though!

Looks like my dad has been conned. There is a letter here from Box Cover. £60 per year insurance dated 11th March 2010. Well we have no use for it, both of our Sky+HD boxes are out of warranty ages ago.

Here's a page with some tips from Sky Protect. Probably common sense to most but might be worth passing on to people who may be a tad too trusting.

Just had them on again, I said no, the caller said "what will I do, if it breaks down?"
I replied "buy another one of ebay"

warranties are a waste of money ! not worth the paer they are printed on,as there are so many clauses that exclude you getting your money back.

Sky Protect is for mugs. Why pay £8.25p for cover of a Sky HD box?.

My HD box packed up last week and when they quoted me Sky Protect ,a £65 call out charge and buying a new box HD box I told em to stuff it. As soon as I told them I was giving them 31 days notice of termination of their services and that I can get a better deal from Virgin Media they instantly waived the call out charge and gave me a brand new Amstrad box which has a 20gb bigger hard drive than the Thompson that packed up.

You're looking far too deep - they just cold call numbers at random - many of the people they call don't even have Sky, and many (like me) have receivers long out of guarantee, but they still say 'now your Sky receiver is just out of guarantee'.

It's the few, like you, where they happen to luckily be about right, which makes it seem plausible. It's like spamming on email, you send out so many that a small percentage are bound to be correct!.
I have received calls about extended warranties twice. Both times it was within a week of having a sky engineer out to resolve a problem. One caller told me my one year warranty was about to expire and I should renew it now. They hung up when I informed them I had had that particular box for almost 10 years.
